“Great place”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

We intended to stay 2 nights here and ended up staying 5, so nice was the hotel and so interesting the surrounding areas. There was biking along the most beautiful trails, hill walking along dramatic gorges, great restaurants and medieval hill villages forgotten by time! It was totally unexpected in a little corner of Northern Spain but delightful and enriching. The hotel is a little marvel; although only 3* it is comfortable, clean, good size bedroom and bathroom, great restaurant at more than reasonable prices (and big helpings) and above all a fantastic welcome from Juan Carlos and Estelle. JC had bicycles delivered and collected for €10/day, they remained secure in the yard at night. Free car parking outside the door. Free wifi. No air-con but it's not really needed and opening the windows gets fresh mountain air into the bedroom and the area is quiet so no noise problem. Breakfast included in room rate and although not on the counter eggs can be included if you ask. If you are inseparable from electronic stuff ask for a room with good wifi reception as quality varies. Very pleasant garden (no wifi reception, you'll have to smell the roses!!) Be sure to visit restaurant Esbardu 3 mins walk away.

Room Tip: First floor overlooking mountains, and rooms over reception area have best wifi.

La Casona de Don Santos is a gem. The hospitality we experienced here was of the highest order. My wife and I had a wonderful 3 night stay in September, and it was the perfect introduction to Asturias. The hotel, beautifully and tastefully restored from a former church, offers 5-star comfort yet retains historical features such as a 14th Century Chapel, which is a must-see. We arrived speaking little Spanish, but that was no problem for Juan Carlos and Estella, who helped us organise a great itinerary. This included a walk to Pedroveya through dramatic scenery, and cycle rides along the Senda del Oso (Path of the Bear). High-quality mountain bikes were hired through CBTT, who knew the hotel, and offered a very convenient delivery and pick-up service, even during low season when we were there. The hotel is perfectly located less than a minute from the start of some world-class off-road cycle routes, which took us through some of the most amazing Asturian countryside. The highlight of our stay was Juan Carlos' offer of a drive up to Bandujo, an elevated viewing spot to see wild deer and bears. Such was the extent of their fantastic hospitality. All the activity stimulated our appetites and we were thoroughly impressed by the delicious dishes coming from Estella's kitchen. We recommend the traditional local fare such as the Cabrito and stuffed onions. Come with an appetite though, the portions are generous, in true Asturian fashion.

I don't speak much Spanish, and the owners not much English, but they really made sure that everything was OK for me during my recent stay. This got to the point where they asked one of their better English speaking friends if they could ask me if everything was OK.

The room was well appointed, clean with a modern bathroom and balcony.

The hotel itself has a restaurant which serves traditional food in big portions offering great value and the wine list is extensive. I ate in last night and had the goat stew (with a beer) followed by cheesecake for €20.

Breakfast was all set out per table and there was a choice of yogurt, croissant, fresh fruit, fruit juice, cakes and coffee was served to order. Breakfast is served 8:30-11.

Free wifi with a code, available in the bedrooms and hotel building, but was weak in the garden. Again, the owners mentioned this to me.

A lovely hotel managed by lovely people which I would happily visit again.

I had a bike which, while there was no dedicated bike storage I could leave in the yard with all the bottled drinks! The gates are locked between 8am and midnight anyway so it was not an issue about security.

Room Tip: Room 101 has a nice balcony
