“Slow Spokes On The Rail Trail”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

My husband and I were part of the Slow Spokes group that stayed at The Naseby Lodge accommodation recently while biking the Otago Rail Trail. Our host, Peter, greeted our group from the Ranfurly Railway Station and transported us to the Lodge for one night's accommodation. We were all most impressed with the complex made of local mud clay bricks and window frames from trees grown in the Naseby Black Forest and even more impressed with the well equipped, spacious, warm, clean bedrooms and living areas. Highly recommend staying at this facility.

The Trail Lodge is new with a rustic build. We have stayed here before and it is perfect. Very clean well equipped with large bedroom and bathroom facilities. The Restaurant has only been open with a bar licence for about a year. We dined and found it full of rail trail cyclists. The food was great we had Lamb Shanks and so did the majority of the other diners, Perfect comfort food for weary bodies. Lovely selection of good Otago wines. Fantastic stay thank-you we will be back.

Room Tip: They are all good.

We have just had a great weekend staying at the Naseby Lodge. We have stayed there before and will do again. Our 2 bedroom unit is functional with plenty of space. Our hosts are helpful and friendly. Free wi fi allowed us to watch TV on demand, compensating for the lack of reception otherwise. Love that heated floor in the bathroom!

6 of us stayed in 3 double cabins for a couple of nights in March while we were biking the Central Otago Rail Trail ( fantastic, but that's another review).
We all found the standard of accommodation much better than any of the other motels/hotels we experienced during the week.....so much so, that we all commented on how classy the place was. If you are contemplating staying in Naseby, and why wouldn't you if you were visiting Central Otago, then you should stay here. Clean, comfortable, spacious. Warm too I suspect in the winter as the units had plenty of heating. But perhaps the best surprise about this place was the standard of the food. Absolutely top notch. The chef during our stay was a young fellow, perhaps recently graduated from a cooking school, and he turned out dishes much fancier restaurants in Auckland, Wellington, Sydney or Melbourne would have been proud to have served up.

Room Tip: The 1 bedroomed units are huge compared to most hotel rooms and are perfectly adequate for a couple.

We stayed in a two bedroom unit and it was perfect for our adult family of five,a double bedroom, a bedroom with twin beds and a comfortable fold out couch in the lounge. The shower and bathroom were very modern and the lounge room was big enough for us to relax and not feel that we were sitting on top of each other.
We had dinner at the restaurant and Shelagh and Michael welcomed us like we were old family friends. We had a bottle of a Central Otago Pinot Noir that Michael recommended and it was excellent.
We understand that the resident Chef is on maternity leave and that the new Chef is a young man from Dunedin. The main meals we had were as good as anything we would get at restaurants in Auckland and we were so impressed with the mains that we all had desserts which were equally great.
This was a wonderful place to stay off the beaten track, but worth the effort to travel to for great Kiwi hospitality.

We have just enjoyed a comfortable stay at the lodge we especially enjoyed our nice modern 1 bedroom unit with the very comfortable bed. We enjoyed the company of the lovely friendly hosts who made us feel very welcome. We all enjoyed a lovely meal of Lamb Shanks in the restuarant (even though we knew the chef was a little unwell). Would recommend the shanks to anyone going there. Thanks guys for a nice visit.

We stayed in an attractive one-bedroom unit for one night in early summer. We found the unit perfectly clean and obviously new, and the bed was comfortable. The lodge is situated centrally and the owner was friendly. Naseby Lodge would be our first choice if we were staying in Naseby again.
