“We keep coming back”
Reviewed 4 July 2014 via mobile

Four of us (plus three large dogs) stopped off for lunch and took a table in the lovely garden. Two of us had been to the Kirkstile Inn before on a number of occasions and had been singing its praises to our friends. They weren't disappointed as the bar and waiting staff were very welcoming and as usual the food was both tasty and plentiful - the steak and ale pie was incredible. Pretty much every table in the beer garden had at least one canine guest but the tables are spread out enough to avoid too much interaction. I can't fault it - I just wish I hadn't been driving as the Loweswater Gold is pretty good too.

Wonderful location, great staff and fantastic fare - why wouldn't you keep coming back?

Enjoyed a delicious plate of fish and chips in the garden.
Excellent location helped by brilliant sunshine.
Couple of pints of local ale helped too!
Lovely old pub, we haven't been here for a while but wasn't disappointed by the food and drink.
The pub was busy but quickly took food orders and got meals out in good time.

Live locally so have eaten here often over last 10 years. Felt a couple of years ago that it lost its way somewhat - service was poor and miserable, food not interesting and over seasoned. However, have eaten here twice in the last couple of months and it is much improved. The food is interesting, there is something for everyone and I think its reasonably priced. The last time we went a member of our party had a complicated dietary issue and the staff were more than helpful and very attentive - and smiley! Strangely enough I differ from a previous reviewer - I don't like the terrace but love the restaurant. You can't please everyone! Definitely worth a visit and I would recommend to anyone. Hope to be eating there again in a couple of weeks.

We have driven past this pub a couple of times on the way back from some fantastic walks. This evening we just went to chill. A lovely garden looks towards Melbreak and we shared this space with other people just enjoying the view.

The food was nice although it seemed to be priced at the top end of the scale. Having said that, the staff were attentive without being overpowering and it was very nice to be not only trusted with the condiments but trusted with rainbow peppercorns!

An honest opinion? Well, my husband said that his belly pork was nice, but not the best that he has had locally. (Braithwaite wins!) For me though, I had vegetable fritters with goats cheese and these were served very well. The salad served with the fritters was excellent but Michael Winner was right -tomatoes should not be put into a fridge.

Stayed at Kirkstile after reading reviews on trip advisor. Not disappointed. clean room with magnificent view. Really excellent food _ recommend the locally produced smoked trout starter. Spent very wet afternoon by the fire in the bar. Bar lady very friendly and helpful. It is clear that they are always very busy and it was a shame that the man who showed us our room on Friday night did not take the time to mention that we could book a pack lunch for the next day and have fresh milk- however we were late in arriving and they put table time back for us ,. Would recommend eating in the bar rather than the restaurant as it was a bit too intimate and stuffy. The new terrace is lovely. Definitely stay again.

I have frequented the Kirkstile for over 10 years & have never been disappointed. From a coffee & sandwich after a good walk, drying off by the fire. To a booked birthday lunch with family. To an evening meal outside in the sun (yes we get sun up here) I have never been disappointed. Last night I enjoyed the belly pork, with a mustard mash, lovely bit of crackling, black pudding balls & seasonal vegs beautifully presented & very tasty. Their own beer is well worth try. Disabled parking is available with access into the Inn through the front door & around the side into the garden. Also accessible toilet. Can be a bit tight for a wheelchair inside, but I promise you it can be done. The live music nights are worth a go too. Facilities clean & staff knowledgeable & friendly. Have never stayed there, as I live locally so sorry can't comment.

We dined here one evening on a recommendation. It has great atmosphere and great food....oh and great beer too! We bought some of the latter as a takeaway also. One of the best pubs in Lakeland. We recommend the shoulder of lamb, also the belly pork. And a pint of Loweswater Gold :)
