“Posh Nosh - A Treat Worth Experiencing!”
Reviewed 27 August 2013

We were lucky to have received a dinner, bed and breakfast gift from our close friends and chose this hotel. It did not disappoint, the drive in was amazing to be greeted by the impressive house. We checked in and were allocated a room in the Riverview rooms which had a balcony with views to the river. The room had everything you needed and the bed were very comfortable.

The evening meal was amazing with the menu changed every night. Very much 'art' on a plate, unusual combinations that amazed the taste buds. Breakfast was good with hot food made to order. Staff were very attentive and pleasant, in particular the lady in charge of housekeeping at the Riverside section.

On leaving the hotel we were greeted by the owner asking if we had enjoyed our stay. Most definitely. He was interested to know if we found any fault, only one comment; the walk from the room to the main house could be a problem if the weather was bad!

All in all would recommend this hotel - very pleasant experience.

Room Tip: Try and get a room in the hotel.

Dear Greekislandchaser,

Thank-you for your kind words in your review about Ballathie.

I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us. We are very fortunate to have such a passionate “artist” for a chef and his team do a great job at executing his creations. It is rewarding to read about how you enjoyed your stay.

We look forward to welcoming you back again soon – I have made a special mention to Mr Milligan to do something about the weather for you…

we have choosen this hotel for one night on way from Skye Island to Edinburgh and it was pitty that we could stay there only one night. great little palace surrounded with well maintained park, next to picturesque river. We got very nice room with large bathroom, where we could have a shower and admire nice view through window at the same time. We had a great dinner there which made our evening. And the most important: the service you will never experience in any chain hotel - we felt important and valued guests. Cannot wait to stay there again!

just a word of warning if your thinking about booking this hotel. my wife & i booked into the riverside rooms for one night while our foster kid was on respite in perth. Big mistake we were there on the 13/8/13 for a relaxing night. On the surface the room looked ok. until we retired for a good nights sleep then it all started... I started scratching my wife started scratching & that was the rest of the night .. in the morning i started to investigate the back of the headboard had 2 inches of dust dead skin disgusting . in the toilet the skirting boards were thick with dust as for the mirror i wrote my name & date on the top of it & took photographs . i also took pictures of the dead beasts crushed to the wallpaper. IN the morning i showed the assistant manager some of the pictures taken she was so apologetic & disgusted she charged us no money & said we could have a free night with dinner wild horses could not drag me back there. the next few days were horrid lets just say we had a skin condition that had to be treated by the doctor. Also cost us over £200 renewing bedding pillows sheets ect j&i kilgannon

Dear **********,

Thank you for all of your e-mails. I am sorry that you need to endure this treatment.

We have taken this allegation very seriously and, not being experts in this field, we have sourced professional help and guidance.

We have contacted two independent pest control experts to do a spot check on our rooms and to check the room you stayed in specifically. They have found no traces of mites or any other parasites.

I have contacted the laundry supplier who provides our linen and they have reassured me that their linen is cleaned to the highest standard and sanitised.

I have contacted the guests who stayed in your room before you and after you and they have shown no symptoms.

We have sought medical advice and it has been confirmed to us that it can take up to 6 weeks for the symptoms of scabies to show and that the symptoms you are experiencing would not occur 24 hours after exposure to mites. They do however state that if you have had scabies before then symptoms can appear sooner.

All of these reports are available should you like to see them.

In summary, the facts are that (1) two qualified experts have confirmed that there is no evidence of mites or any other parasites in the hotel and more particularly your room, (2) the customers who stayed in your room the nights before and after your stay have no signs of the symptoms of scabies, (3) we use a very reputable laundry supplier who has confirmed that all of their laundry is cleaned and sanitised to a high standard, and (4) the medical advice we have received is that it would not be possible for you to be experiencing the symptoms you have reported on *** August had you only been exposed to the mites on *** August.

In view of these facts it seems extremely unlikely that you contracted scabies whilst staying at Ballathie on 13 August

It is very disappointing to know that there are people in this world who think they can manipulate the system to get things for free and ruin a hotels reputation.

Regards,

Jody Marshall

We got a great deal via Groupon and stayed in one of the Sportsmans lodges. The accommodation was a bit rustic but would be exactly right for visitors staying for the shooting or fishing as it is away from the main building and would not disturb other guests. We were staying to watch the meteor shower and warned the bar staff we would be out in the grounds in the middle of the night-they were very friendly and interested! Breakfast was wonderful and the afternoon tea and scones were memorable. Lovely house so will be back!

We had one of the Riverside Lodges and as the name suggests looked over the river. The room was super with a large comfortable bed, and spotlessly clean.
Breakfast was superb as was the dinner. A comfortable relaxing lounge area made for a memorable stay.
The staff are friendly ,helpful and efficient

We booked a night here during our coast to coast walk from Fort William to St Andrews as it was the only place for miles around; as it was expensive, we viewed this as our luxury night of the holiday and were looking forward to a nice stay.
There was a sign for walkers to use the 'sportsman's entrance', but we couldn't find this so took our pack and boots off and went into the main reception. The staff there were unfriendly; I had to wait to be greeted and there was no welcome, just the formality of the paperwork.
We were in the converted stables and paid £120/room/night. I was very disappointed with the quality of the room that was little more than a Travelodge in my opinion and definitely not worth the money. There were none of the little touches one would expect from such a hotel; there was rust on the bathroom radiator, the bath handle was falling off, there were no complementary shampoos or conditioners, there was patchy wi-fi in the rooms and not a decent selection of teas in the room.
The bar was nice and the staff were helpful here; we were able to order a bar snack and the food was good value.
The breakfast was amazing and the waiting staff were friendly and helpful; they even did a pot of hot chocolate for my daughter who doesn't drink tea or coffee.
When we checked out, they had got the bill wrong and they didn't thank us for the stay or ask if everything had been ok for us. For a 4 star hotel, this was disappointing service.
I'm sure the rooms in the main hotel would be better, but there doesn't seem to be much focus on service from the management.

Dear CorDav,

Thank-you for taking the time to write a review about Ballathie House Hotel.

I have sent you a private E-mail to try and encourage dialog between us before I wrote this response but unfortunately I have not received a reply.

Here at Ballathie we like to think that we work hard at trying to exceed our guest’s expectations. In my opinion this is proportionate – the number of guest’s requirements we get right is in direct proportion to the number we get wrong; but we keep on trying to get it right. I am sorry on this occasion that you feel we got it wrong. I wish you had mentioned this to me when we met in the bar in the evening whilst you were having your evening meal.

I do hope that you return to our hotel so that we can show you what Ballathie standards are.

Kind regards,

Jody Marshall

Wouldn't have been disappointed if we had paid full price! Certainly delighted with the deal we got.
