“Lovely Location”
Reviewed 1 October 2013

Ballathie House is set in the most lovely part of Scotland, and with our room looking out onto the river, and fields opposite with horses rolling around, the views couldn't be better.

We ate in the dining room the first night but were disappointed to learn they don't do Bar Suppers, which we'd planned the following evening. We were told we could have one item off the main menu or a sandwich...neither of which was what we were looking for so we ate in Dunkeld instead. While I understand the emphasis is more on Fine Dining I think it's a real shame they don't offer bar meals as another option.

The pros are the extremely friendly staff, the lovely setting, the fantastic dinner in the restaurant and the fabulously large comfortable bed. The cons were our very dated room full of pine furniture which made it look as if it belonged in the 80's, cold toast (on both mornings), and having to head out for a bar supper.

Dear Fabatfourtyish,

Thank for taking the time to write a review about Ballathie House Hotel.

We have become a food destination hotel with our emphasis focused on fine cuisine which is accompanied with a comprehensive wine list and all of the diner trimmings. I am delighted that you enjoyed your meal with us on the first evening and apologise that this was not the product you were looking for on your second evening. I am very proud however that our reception staff were able to organise you and alternative.

It is rewarding to hear that as a whole you enjoyed your stay with us.

We look forward to welcoming you again when you are next down from Aberdeen.

Kind regards,

Jody Marshall

My partner and I ventured up to Ballathie House from the Scottish Borders. Filled with excitement and anticipation. Naturally we were not disappointed. We were made to feel like we had returned home, the welcome we received was brilliant. Full of smiles and nothing was too much trouble. We settled in and took a walk round the estate - just magical.

From our wonderful room, to the cosy bar where we sat in anticipation of dinner it was just fantastic - Scott Scorer is a genius in the kitchen and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of dinner.

A truly special place! We can't wait for our next visit.

Scott is the power house behind the food here at Ballathie and he and his team have done an amazing job in steering the hotel into new culinary grounds – It is a privilege and pleasure to work with such a committed Chef. My Husband and I have stayed in the Ballathie House during our stay in Scotland. And I must admit that untill now I am under impression of that place! Huge, beautiful grounds, spacious country house, river close by. We stayed there for just one night, but I wish we could have spent more time there..
Amazing, friendly and helpful staff, charming Owner! Delicious food, very professional and friendly waiters! Comfortable, pretty interiors, both rooms and hotel public spaces like restaurant, lobbies.

There was no single thing we did not like there! Strongly recommend!

We spent a night at Ballathie at the end of a recent short break in the Highlands. Our room was very comfortable and the food, especially the lamb, was outstanding. The sommelier was very knowledgeable and helpful in selecting an appropriate wine at a reasonable price. Our only negative observation was that, unlike in all other country house hotels we have visited, reception staff did not show us to our room. Assistance was offered with baggage which we declined but to be handed a key and told that "your room is upstairs and along the corridor" is not the warmest of welcomes for visitors. Given the attention to detail in other aspects of the services provided, we found this more than a little suprising.

Dear Sairfecht,

It is wonderful to read that you experienced such a wonderful stay at Ballathie.

My deepest apologies that you were not offered baggage assistance to your room. This is one of our core essentials. I have taken this up with reception who reassure me that this will be dealt with in the future.

I am very happy that this did not put a damper on your stay and that you enjoyed everything else Ballathie has to offer.

I do hope you return soon to enjoy our “Wow Factor!”

I had the privilege to stay a night at this hotel, and what a welcoming experience from all the staff. When I arrived, a wine tasting had just started, and I was invited to participate - some lovely wines, and such a good way to meet other guests! My room was a single, and was a good size. The bed was incredibly comfortable - I had a great night's sleep in the peaceful surroundings. The Manager, Jody Marshall, was very hospitable and conscientious about making guests feel relaxed and welcome. Fantastic!!

We stayed in one of the Riverside Rooms and had a beautiful view over the river from our balcony. The rooms are quite spacious and very comfortable and it is only a short walk to the Hotel. We felt the bar area was a little small and while the food in the Restaurant was excellent we felt the Restaurant lacked atmosphere and could do with some tasteful background music. The staff were very helpful and professional and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Wonderful hotel in lovely grounds and gardens running down to the river Tay with fantastic food. The staff were all excellent and in particular the bar man and the waitress. The owner pops in now and then with his black lab Murphy, and just wanders around talking to guests as if they were old friends. One little niggle, no freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast. Would definitely come again as it is so luxurious yet cosy.
