We had the pleasure of staying at Kariega River Lodge during our first trip to South Africa.

The location was perfect, just over an hour from Port Elizabeth Airport. The service at Kariega was wonderful; the staff made sure you were always taken care of, while also giving you space and privacy.

The food was delicious and each meal offered a variety to choose from. We really enjoyed trying some of the local dishes!

We were in the hippo suite and our room was perfect with a beautiful view and the giraffes upon our arrival. The lodge offered adapters and a hair dryer in the room which were both very helpful to have. Our only problem while staying was with the running water going out a couple of times due to a broken pipe, but everything else made up for it so we didn't mind.

Our ranger was Dave and he was extremely knowledgable and experienced as a guide - we learned so much more than we expected and we truly appreciated that! Dave was very passionate about kariega and the wildlife and that really came through in our game drives. We got so close to the animals, we were able to get amazing photos... It was a wonderful experience!

We really enjoyed being with the same ranger and group during our stay, as it helped you to get to know everyone a little better.

We would highly recommend Kariega River Lodge for your safari experience and hope to make it back one day!

We really enjoyed two fantastic days at the River Lodge. We had a well-designed, great and really nice room with a marvelous view at the bushman's river. Our ranger Tayla was fantastic: well informed about the flora and fauna of south africa with a good nose for the animals at the game drive. During our four drives we saw a few times the group of lions, the rhino family during an unforgettable thunder-storm at the high plateau, the elephants with their babies, the buffaloes, the herd of zebras at a waterhole, the funny warthogs, many kinds of antelopes, the giraffes, but also the smaller ones like milliped, variant types of beautiful kingfishers during our boat trip and crabs. We like the relaxed atmosphere at the river lodge, the good daily structure, food for everyone like vegetarians, the friendly and helpful staff. We went with the feeling to stay longer the next time. Thank you, especially Tayla and all the others behind the scenes. You made our stay unforgattable!

Kariega is a special place. We stayed for 3 nights and it was the perfect amount of time. All staff from the main gate to the lodge staff are extremely professional and friendly. The rooms are massively as are the beds which is also the most comfortable I've ever slept in. The lodge is stunning and the view out on the river is beautiful.

Our ranger, Dave was extremely knowledge and you never stop learning. A true professional and an asset to the reserve but will also have become your friend by the end of your stay. My gf and I got engaged on our last night and Dave helped set up our private dinner & champagne.

The viewings of the animals is amazing and they don't overcrowd them at all. The most they will allow around them is 2 vans and the vast majority of the time you are on your own, even with big game. We had two stand out experiences, one with a pack of Lions and one amongst a herd of Elephants surrounding the van and play fighting with each other, amazing!

When you finish your evening drive you know you are in for a feast, each night was a different type of game on the menu from beef to kudu to eland and all tender and delicious. Great wines to suit.

All in all an amazing place that rightly so will remain a special place for us. We've been twice now and will look to return in the future.

Room Tip: 3 days was great to ensure good viewings and allows for getting unlucky on a day with the weather or shy animals

One of the best experience in our life. Perfect organisation, very welcoming, friendly and professional staff. Rangers are very helpful, having best of their knowledges transmitting to the guests. Professional guest villas, catering and entertaining the clinets. Almost everything included in the price.

Room Tip: Dont miss to visit while you are at Garden route area

From the moment you step off the transport from the gate (having spotted giraffe and warthog on route) you are made to feel special. Cold towels and a drink await you. After a night drive you get hot towels. There is loads of space for twenty people although the lodge was not full when we were there. We had the Zebra suite which is an enormous room and has a deck right on the river. Only a few steps from the lodge.

The food was delicious and very hard to resist. We all ate too much. The wines were good too. The staff were very attentive and helpful and really friendly. Emma the little bush pig (fully house trained) was very cute trotting around. Sometimes monkeys try to sneak in and they are soon chased away.

Our ranger, Zolani, was excellent at finding the game. He was also good at moving the truck so that you could get a good photo with sun in the right place. He was only wary around the water buffalo all the other animals were so close. On two occasions I could have touched an elephant as the herd walked around the truck. The lions decided to move location and walked right by. Most of the time they were sleeping off the last meal. We got great shots of the hippos too. It was an amazing experience and we were lucky to get a great set of people sharing our truck and meals.

I would recommend this reserve to anyone.
