We stayed in the River Lodge between Nov 24th and Nov 27th 08. It is a fantastic place and we were very well looked after. I was on honeymoon with my husband and we received a small bottle of champagne and fruit platter when we arrived which was a nice touch. Our room was huge and was fabulously decorated. The food and staff we were great too. On 2 of the nights we sampled the outside Boma where we sampled typical African food buffet style and the staff put on a show of traditional African dancing and singing. This was a great experience. But the best aspect of the stay had to be the game drives. Our Ranger Mike was absolutely superb in getting close to the animals. He seemed to have a 6th sense for knowing where they would be and he was not scared in getting INCREDIBLY close to the animals. We saw almost everything apart from the leopards which are notoriously hard to spot anyway. Mike defininitely seemed like the best ranger there. So knowledgeable and friendly. He also had the best stories to tell which made it all the more exciting.
We picked this place because it was slightly cheaper than other places such as Shamwari and we definitely did the right thing as we received top notch service and went on amazing game drives. It could not have been any better.

we were a party of 2 married couples. we spent 2 nights at Kariega Game Reserve, South Africa, from 26th September 2008. We stayed in the River Lodge. On our arrival we were met my Mike who was to be out guide for the next 2 days. We had a fantastic time. There was only 6 in our group and Mike dedicated himself to us. He knew everything about the safari and was able to answer any question we asked. He was polite, funny and made sure we got to see as many of the big 5 as possible. our acommodation was wonderful. The rooms were big and well furnished. had an open air sitting room joining both bedrooms. the men fished from our jetty during game drives while the girls sunbathed. we were in one of the lodges a short distance from the main lodge and had the use of a golf buggy to get us to and from our rooms. They were great fun expecially after a few glasses of red wine. The food was plentyful and tasted great. with plenty of choice. the evening meal was set menu and we had fabulous food the 2 nights we stayed. Up early each morning for the game drives, 5 am. a cup of coffee and a muffin and off for a 2 hour drive. huge breakfast on our return. if you are going make sure you wear warm clothing including a hat. it can get cold early in the morning and late evening.

Arrived 31 st July 2008 late in the afternoon, enough time to be shown to our lodge opposite the Waterhole (which appeared to be one of the better locations) before dinner. Food was fantastic but excessive with superb Breakfasts, four course lunch and dinners. It was so good that one didn't like to miss out.. Normally a good selection from four of five dishes to choose from catering for the vegitatrians as well as the carnivoures. Tomato and Orange soup along with the Ostrich streaks were our favorites

We immediately loved the place on arrival. The Main lodge was absolutely beautiful on the River bank with plenty of places to sit and relax, the bedroom lodges were very comfortable with plenty of room. Beds were so huge that you could lose your bride in them.

Due to the limited number of lodges it was very easy to meet people over a glass of very good South Afiican wine (free). All visitors are allocated to a Ranger who will look after you for the duration. You will have breakfast and dinner with your Ranger and fellow Landrover Cruiser collegues.

Our Ranger was Mike and he made the holiday for us being very knowledgeable and making the drives very interesting. We can't thank him enough. Alll the Rangers and staff were so friendly towards us and our needs to make this a superb Honeymoon.

We stayed for 7 nights which is longer than normal. I would advise perhaps a couple of nights elswhere for comparison or variety although there was plenty to see. It suited us being on honeymoon to relax and we couldn't have selected any better.

We would certainly return one day when our daughter is a bit older.

We are quite happy to sharre photos with those who we met at River lodge, so please do not hesitate to email for links to Image hosting site.

FANTASTIC
George & Jacquie.

We stayed in the River Lodge in Kariega Game reserve in July, 2008. It is a beautiful place and the food is absolutely gorgeous. The Rangers went out of their way to be helpful to us, doing their best to ensure we saw the best the reserve had to offer. The rooms are really lovely. Our only problem was that we didn't realise how cold it was going to be at that time of year. Scarfs, gloves and hats were definately needed and we found that the rooms and the main dining room were actually quite cold most of the time. So if you're going at that time of year, make sure you have plenty of warm clothes and you'll have a ball.

We arrived to a lovely welcome. After parking the car we were seated and offered drinks and whilst one of the staff members sang to us in her local tongue. We felt a bit uncomfortable at first but it really was a great start to our 3 night stay. We were then transferred to our lodge in one of the Kariega jeeps (took no more than 5-10 mins). We were met by Ruan who was to be our ranger for the duration of the stay. We had our lunch (3 courses) which was amazing, but you really need to be hungry as the food portions are generous. There is a really good choice of menu, so if you just want something light or you are ravenous there is something for everyone. The staff are so friendly and helpful and the setting is just amazing, All meals are taken on the deck looking over the river. We were shown to our chalet and it really was luxurious and we were also given champagne and a fruit platter as were on our honeymoon. In total there were only 12 guests at the lodge when we were there (it can take up to 20) so you really felt like you had the place to yourself. We went on 6 game drives in total and whilst our ranger Ruan was knowledgeable he could have been more helpful in offering information. This really was only a minor point as we saw lots of game including 4 out of the big 5 plus giraffe, hippo and zebra. It really is a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend the river boat trip down Bushman river to the beach. Everyday the food did not disappoint and the wine is also excellent. There is no restriction to the quality or quantity of wine or beer that you are allowed to consume in your inclusive package. We had a great chalet next to the lodge, however there is a couple of chalets that require you to use a golf buggy to get to and from the lodge. We met an Irish couple who had one of these chalets, but they said is was great fun using the buggy and it only took a few mins to get to the main lodge.

If you are reading this then you are obviously thinking about going, stop thinking and just book it!! We are already planning to go back!
I finished off my honeymoon with 3 nights in Riverlodge, and it was the perfect ending to our trip!
We headed here after 10days in Legends in Mauritius and to be honest i didnt want to leave Legends but when i got here i was pleasantly surprised!
The staff could not have been nicer. You are put into a group and assigned a ranger (Mike was ours - the best!), there were 8 in our group plus Mike. You have breakfast and dinner together with everyone in your group and lunch by yourselves. I could not compliment the chef enough, the food was gorgeous. There was great variety!
We had breakfast every morning at 7.30am and then went for our first game drive about 8.15am until approx 11.30am. You can then relax by the pool until lunch at 1.00pm. Your second game drive starts at 3.30pm until about 7.00pm, this drive is the best as the animals are more active in the evening!
Our ranger Mike was brilliant, he takes the most risks from all the rangers, it was just my husband and I on the last day so Mike took us to see whatever we wanted. Lions were up walking around staring at us, elephants touching me as they passed our truck (very frightening-remember these are wild animals, Ive never been so frightened and excited at the same time!) If you can get your travel agent to request Mike, you will not be disappointed! He will bring you so close to the animals, nearly too close and he will also keep you well entertained with his stories and jokes!
Missing it already, cant wait to go back!
Enjoy!

We have just come back from a 3 day trip to the river lodge and all I can say is if you get a chance to go there - grab it with both hands as it was an incredible experience. The lodges were very nice and comfy , the food was great and the staff were so friendly that we felt like part of a big family. Our ranger Alan was extremely knowledgable and got us so close to the animals that we were practically sitting in their laps!! It was one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had .... fabulous!!!
