As we were travelling to the annual St. Dennis' Day festival in Zante town on 24th of August, we decided to pre-book a hotel room in the town for the night, thereby allowing us to soak up the party atmosphere and not worry about queueing for hours for a taxi back to our resort later. Having researched on TripAdvisor prior to our holiday, we shortlisted 2 hotels, the Strada Maris and The Phoenix, both centrally located and overlooking the harbour. In the end we went for The Phoenix and we were so glad we did.
On our arrival we were given a very warm Greek welcome at reception before being shown to our room. Our room, while small, was so cosy with carpet (unusual for Greece), 24" flat screen TV with numerous channels, free air conditioning and one of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in. It had a private balcony which overlooked the main square in the town, Solomos Square, and the Ionian Sea. We got so comfortable we were nearly ordering room service and had to drag ourselves out to the festival!
After the festival we ordered food and drinks from a great menu in the outdoor bar area at the front of the hotel(they also have tables on the square). Pizza was big, and gorgeous, and they served the nicest strawberry daiquiri around. Despite being their busiest night of the year, the staff were so friendly and engaging and the food did not take too long to arrive. The adjoining St.Mark's Square, with it's restaurants and bars, was abuzz with locals enjoying the festivities.
We were so impressed with the hotel that we enquired about booking a second night but our budget didn't allow it. We'll be better prepared next time!
We found this to be a modern, sophisticated, comfortable, spotlessly clean hotel, set in a wonderful location, serving good food and drink, with attentive, engaging staff.
The Phoenix Hotel's sister hotel, The Phoenix Beach, in nearby Tsilivi (with Anthony, best barman/showman in town!), where we stayed last year, is also highly recommended!
P.s. We had a look in the Strada Maris Hotel. Two words: No way!
