We didn't try both paths, just the shorter path (about a mile round trip). At points the path is quite steep. Steps are dug into the ground to make the walk easier, but I found that treacherous.
The rock is quite the site and the view is spectacular. I don't recommend going that close to the rock as it's quite a way down if you slip.
We went in May and the bugs were simply awful. We had bug spray on but the insects didn't seem to mind at all.
