I would recommend taking Sage Creek Rim Road to check out Roberts Prairie Dog Town especially if you're going west anyway. Kids are sure to enjoy watching these little critters. Roll down your windows and listen as they alert other prairie dogs by barking.

This was interesting, there was no grass. Due to not much rainfall this past year there was no vegetation. It is fun to watch the coyotes, pronghorns, and eagles while watching the Prairie Dogs.

I was worried I would some how not see a prairie dog I saw so many I thought my head would explode. They are plentiful and they are noisy and they like to stand tall in there hole looking all cute and tall just like you would hope.If you take the loop road you will see this.

Located on The Sage Creek Rim, This is a must stop.

Prairie Dogs galore in their natural environment, take some time to watch and enjoy these wonderful denizens of The Badlands.

The Roberts Praire Dog Town is a fitting reward for those who travel on Sage Creek Rim Road. Most of the road is un-paved and very ridged. It can be difficult to find a speed that feels both safe and doesn't literally rattle you to death. We took the road based on a recommendation from a park navigation app. You definitely wouldn't want to do it while the road is soaking wet (it was damp when I did it), but there are many more spectacular overlooks on that road and it is worth going at least as far as the prairie dogs, before you can loop back to a highway that takes you to the main entrance (re-enter) of the park from Wall, SD. Also note, however, if you only want to see praire dogs, you will most likely also see them from the main loop road (alternative route).
