Getting to this section of Canyon Lands can take up a lot of your time. We stayed in Moab and it takes at least an hour and a half to get there. Trials here are either easy or very strenuous. Ended up doing 2 small easy hikes. Did Cave Spring trial. Not long but you need to climb 2 ladders to complete the trail then hike over slick rock trails. It also takes you along cave like shelters along the way. You will also hike over slick rock trails (nice views from there). The only trail markers are cairns (small piles of rocks). Pay attention to them. We ended up helping a young man look for his father. We walked the trail twice. Luckily, the man found his way to a park ranger. He said he didn’t think they were anything but a pile of rocks. Good shoes, water and sun protection a must. Enjoy.

We spent a day here, before going to Islands, the following day. The view approaching Needles District are fabulous for 15 miles before you even get there. The Petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock are assessible to anyone, and free. The Visitor Center has a film, lots of guides, and Rangers to help you plot your visit on their map. This is the chance to use flush toilets too. There are a number of hike you can do, from short to very long. Trails guides are available for most. We did Roadside Ruin, Cave Springs, and Pothole Point. We are seniors, and these are fairly modest in distance and fitness requirements. Many others we viewed from the roadside or parking area. I found the Needles District to be one of the top 5 of the 30 or so Nat Pks we have visited, and better than the more visited Islands District. it is amazing that all this can be had for $25 per car!

The Needles district has some great hiking and is not as busy as the Island in the Sky district. The Rangers here are awesome! So helpful and friendly! They answered all of our questions, chatted with us, and really wanted us to enjoy the park. Can’t say enough about them, they are a really good team!

This was our second trip to the Needles and like the first, it just wasn't worth the drive when compared to other parks and areas in the region. The drive does take a long time. The rock formations and colors just don't meet others we've seen.

Of Island In the Sky, Arches and Needles I would say Needles is my least favorite of the Moab area National Parks.

It's a far drive (1.5 hours from Moab)... and there just aren't that many things to see. We did a couple short hikes and left disappointed.
