Owner description: Spectacularly rugged Death Valley mountains.

These mountains are rarely discussed, so to be in Death Valley and learn of the plate shift and creation of the mountain ranges is fascinating. They surround the Valley on one side and Mt. Whitney just peeks over them.

We drove from Stovepipe Wells to the west side of Death Valley, towards Shoshone. The drive through the mountains was breathtaking and terrifying. I have to do all the driving on our trips due to motion sickness and I don't consider myself all that dainty, but this drive had my palms sweating from fear. It's a different kind of driving from 101. There are a lot of blind curves. Take it slow and absorb the relentless, unbelievable scenery. You will notice the change in temperature and "greenery".

The short off the main road loop is easy and the display of how borax was mined and processed was interesting...to an adult...not sure how much fun a child would have....until the coyotes start to bark. We ended up seeing three and they were about 100 yards away and had no fear....we had more fear. (grin)

More like 50 shades of brown. But they're a wonder to see. Not a lot of big plant life so the geological features can be plainly seen and they are magnificent. I only wish i'd had more time to stop and look around.

If you are entering Death Valley from the West, stop at Wildrose Rd. and go to Aguereberry Point first, for a great view of the Valley from the Panamint Mtns.
