“Try it in the dark”

Mengel pass is interesting in the daytime. Try it at night sometime. We came up Goler Wash, entering it around midnight, and arrived at Mengel's stone pilar where his ashes are burried, at 4 a.m.. Coming back two days later during the day was quite an eyeopener. We just had to see what we had missed.

“Goler, Mengel and Butte in May 2003”
Reviewed 23 May 2003

Drove from Windgate road in Paniment to Westside road in Death Valley in May of 2003. The entrance to Goler from the west has one rock climb that requires a bit of forethought. From the Goler Narrows to Mengel Pass things are great as are the wildflowers and cactus. Coming down from Mengel you will come to 3 rough spots that are rock type obstacles. They are just enough to get the heart rate up and brain functioning in the it could hurt mode. Cutting across Butte Valley was awesome and the geology is very impressive. The distance from east to west was 52 miles so make sure you have plenty of gas as the nearest station was in Furnace Creek, which was another 45 miles north of our exit point at Westside rd in Death Valley. The Price of gas in may was $2.32 per gallon. This is a great trip and I would highly recommend it. Be sure to stop along the way and visit Barker Ranch were Charlie Manson used to hide out. The ranch is realy an interesting place if you're old enough to remember the Manson Family. We took 5 hours to make the crossing while loaded down although it could be done in less.
