It's not worth driving over from the east side of the park but if you are in the Panamint area then do visit Darwin Falls. It is a 2 mile dirt road drive to the trailhead and a nice easy hike to the waterfall.

The drive to the parking lot is a little bumpy on the unpaved road but it's worth it. You have to walk (maybe 30-45mins for casual walkers) and the terrain isnt always perfect but the secret little pool and waterfall at the end make it worth it.

Darwin Falls is a set of 3 water falls that are within the confines of Death Valley National Park, near Panamint Springs. Access to the falls is not exactly easy, a few mile drive down a rocky dirt road and a couple of mile hike from the access point. The hike takes you through a narrow canyon, where you have to cross a stream multiple times, and do some minor rock climbing. Really nothing that an average human being shouldn’t be able to handle, but it can be a little strenuous.

You will pass the first falls about a quarter of a mile into the hike. At this point you will start to wonder if you are wasting your time, and why they call these water falls as it is miniscule. Don’t let this stop you from going on, as what you will find further down the trail is much more rewarding. At about a half-mile in you will come upon a beautiful grotto where the second set of falls are located.

A third set of falls is located above the second, some minor climbing experience is required to get to it.

Darwin Falls is a must see in Death Valley. I’m glad that it isn’t exactly an easy place to get to as it has managed to maintain its beauty without being vandalized and heavily trafficked.

My husband spent hours searching for it; do NOT rely on too many people how how to get there, if possible find someone to take you! We had an awesome adventure and found the bottom spring and a bit (large bit) of vegetation, trees, lots of shade and running water (creek) which was all a welcome relief in Death Valley.

We drove in our rear-wheel drive merc and found the road okay. Encountering other vehicles was not a problem; there was room for one vehicle or the other to pull over. Stopping at the first trailhead enabled us to walk to the waterfall and marvel at the effects of a flash flood (we had been told of while in the Panamint Springs restaurant) that swept through the area about a year ago. Note to self: this is not the place to be when it has rained heavily upstream! It was peaceful and beautiful. The terrain was gentle, even for my battered knee.
