Our stay was great here. It is a rustic lodge with great views. The staff was very accommodating and they drove us the 3-4 miles so we could hike around Wonder Lake. They also took part of the group back there when Mt. McKinley was clear so they could get some pictures. Just make sure you have a mosquito head net and gloves as the mosquitos could be bad at times. We panned for gold there and had a dog sled presentation. The rooms were set up like a cabin. Nice and big and very authentic. Very clean.

Room Tip: Not a bad room anywhere. All cabins were divided into two rooms. Each had their own bathroom and sh...

We spent three nights there for our 35th wedding anniversary July 2013! Their bus picked us up a little while after we arrived by train into the Denali Train station. It was about a 6 hour bus ride back to Kantishna! Well worth it! The bus driver was a great! We saw lots of animals on the way! When we got back to our lodging we were shown to our cabin. Our bags were delivered shortly. It is remote and quiet! The cabins are roomy and nicely decorated!!!! In the main lodge building there is a bar and dining room where meals are served family style. Great food and lots of it! The next two days we went on two guided hikes. Both guides were great!!!!! Our first was to Quigley Ridge which was wonderful because "Denali" was out in all it's glory without a cloud! The second hike was to McKinley Bar...Denali only had a few clouds that day!!!! Kantishna Roadhouse is a fantastic place to stay and well run and organized! Everyone there is friendly and a joy to be around!!!! We were lucky we did not have too much of a mosquito problem. Bring head nets just in case. We also had Deet wipes and used them on one hike!

Our trip into the park with Kirsty was the beginning of a delightful 3-night experience. We were amazed with how easily she spotted Dall sheep way up on the hillside, or a moose in the kettle pond way off in the distance. She is definitely a wealth of knowledge about the park! We thoroughly enjoyed the staff at the Kantishna. They did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable and they succeeded beyond our wildest imaginations! We loved the fact that technology has not invaded the lodge; we were "forced" to get to know the staff and guests during our stay. We enjoyed the hikes that were offered as well as the fly-fishing opportunities, the sled dog demonstration and the evening activities planned by the staff members. We would highly recommend the Kantishna Roadhouse experience to anyone.

Room Tip: Ladies - a hairdryer isn't included with the room, so if you need one, make sure you bring it wi...

We stayed here as part of our land package before our cruise. Kirsty is one of the nicest, most gracious people you will ever meet -- she is a fantastic driver and guide. The ride in is part of the whole experience, and she is a fountain of information. The roadhouse cabins are comfortable; the guides are friendly and helpful; you have to bring your positive attitude, weather regardless! There is a small bar in the lodge. Meals are... fine. Nothing great, but fine. Be sure to visit the greenhouse, watch the sled dog demonstration, go gold panning, and go on some hikes (bring your mosqito spray)! We had really rotten weather, but we still had a good, though soggy time :) My word of advice is this -- FLY out if you can afford it. We took the train from Fairbanks to Denali. Then we had to take the bus ride all over again, then get back on the train to go to Anchorage. That was way too much train and bus riding for us. One ride is a novelty and a fun time -- after that, enough!

We came 2 weeks ago as part of a tour. We took the bus ride out which was wonderful. People who criticize the bus ride should have taken a luxury coach on a straight paved road to a casino instead. The ride was spectacular - over a bumpy winding road along the mountainsides. The drivers/ guides are fabulous. The bus has comfy seats and generous legroom. The driver will stop for photo ops. There are several stops along the way in. We saw nearly all the wildlife there is in Denali- moose, brown bear aka grizzlies, caribou, owls, golden eagles, sheep, etc. The roadhouse staff were great, but the guides are not national, park guides so they can't function as a guide on park property. Hiking, biking, fishing, walking, are all available. They also have several educational demos a day- most very good especially the dog mushing one. Accommodations are comfortable, tho our mattress sagged. Food is good and at times excellent. Lodge with pub is a great hangout. We also did flight seeing to Denali from Kantishna Air down the street - they worked very well with the lodge staff to get us in the air. This place and the setting are great. Come here realizing what it is about, and that all supplies need to either go over the same road you do, or be flown in. In that context, this would really be a 5 star place.

We actually stayed here in August 2008 (sorry for the tardy review) as part of a Cruise West tour. While the ride in and ride back out (we were glad we didn't fly out as some have recommended, because we would have missed seeing a pack of wolves and other unforgettable sights), there were plenty of activities at the lodge (including sled dog training and panning for gold) to educate and entertain us.

There are few other ways to experience the mountain in the morning. For people who say the Roadhouse is expensive, compare it with, say, a day in Antarctica, and then try to find a lower-cost substitute. The biggest problem we experienced is that we wanted adjacent rooms and none were available our first night there. My wife was worried about a moose or bear barging into the half-cabin in which she and our daughter were staying. My son and I moved into the neighboring half-cabin for our second night. There were no wildlife incidents beyond a couple of squirrels with attitude.

I find little to quibble with in previous reviews. This is very much a specialty property and can't be compared with traditional hotels/motels/resorts. People less committed to an in-depth Denali experience would probably be better off staying at one of the properties near the park entrance.

Room Tip: Advise in advance if having adjacent rooms is a priority.

Our stay at the Roadhouse was average. The cabins were smallish, the food was average. The staff was friendly, but did not go out of their way to cater to the guests. There is only one Denali and the surroundings are of course impressive. However, while we had a good time at the Roadhouse, we would probably inquire about other accommodations before choosing to stay here again. A quick tip: take the airplane (not the bus) back to the park entrance. The views are amazing.

Dear Elena J,

I appreciate your comments regarding the cabins, food and staff and will keep them in the forefront as I plan for next season. Our short season, 100 days from June 4 through September 11, means we are essentially starting new each year—which has its challenges for sure but also gives us the opportunity to make positive changes based on the feedback we receive from our valued guests. Thank you.
