This was a return trip for us, and we arranged an Alaska vacation around Camp Denali as the focal point this time. That should tell you our opinion. The staff is outstanding. The food is outstanding. The quantity, quality, and thought that has gone into the equipment available for loan is amazing. I'd not expected to find poles, packs, gators, bikes, and on and on available to use.

We spent three nights here as part of our small tour group. This place is heaven if you are an outdoors person. Bear in mind that Camp Denali is not a glitzy city hotel with a lounge, music, swimming pools, etc. It is 90 miles into the park. The setting has to be one of the best in North America. We have stayed in a lot of lodges in the U.S. and Canada and if the weather cooperates, it is simply spectacular. We were fortunate to have perfect weather while at Camp Denali. The owners, Simon and Jenna, make you feel so welcome from the time you arrive. The staff is wonderful, especially those guides who lead daily walks/hikes in Denali National Park. The food is very well prepared and they provide specific seating, which moves at each meal, allowing you to meet new folks at every meal. You stay in your own small cabin with an immaculate outhouse. Showers are in a separate building. The cabins have running water and propane lights. This was a fantastic experience !!!

Room Tip: Try to get a cabin on the upper part of the hill, closer to the dining room and showers.

The entire experience was first class. The rustic cabins, the luxury lodge, the wonderful food, the exceptional personnel, the top-notch equipment and of course the stunning park. The options were many and the disappointments were zero. We would definitely do it again.

Camp Denali May not be for everyone but for those who love the outdoors and want to experience in rustic luxury Camp Denali is heaven on earth. The cabins are situated on bluffs that, when the skies are clear, look out directly on Wonder Lake and Mt Denali. The cabins themselves are cute, clean, and have wonderful beds and bedding. The space is limited but well thought out. The wood stove, for heat, works very well and the kerosene lamps are excellent though rarely needed in the summer since it's light all the time. The outhouses are pristine and right outside.

The activities are excellent allowing for all levels of hiking and accommodating all interests with superb naturalists. And the independent activities such as mountain biking, canoeing, and fishing are well supported.

And the food is to die for. It's superb--better than in any restaurants we visited in Alaska and on par with those in our home in San Francisco. Poached eggs on polenta with fresh fruit and croissant for one breakfast. All breakfasts include fresh orange juice and great coffee along with a self service area of home made granola and oatmeal. Dinner included a home made ravioli stuffed with prawns and scallops one night and an outstanding black cod with book choy (grown in their own green house) no another.

The staff were fabulous. All ages and backgrounds. But all loved the outdoors and many had advanced degrees.

Lastly, Jenna and Simon who own and operate Camp Denali are ever present and always warm and fun to talk to.

GO.

We had been to Denali and Alaska on several previous occasions. Once I learned about Camp Denali, I was intrigued but had to wait for the right time to go. Finally got a chance this summer and it was amazing. Went with the grandparents and the kids. We all love to hike and visiting the Parks is an annual ritual for us. Camp Denali fit like a glove. The scenery is spectacular even on a cloudy day when the mountain is not out. We were absolutely stunned when it was out. The staff are excellent. Consummate professionals with a wealth of knowledge and experience who take excellent care of you. They have a very tight knit community and they want you to enjoy this beautiful place as much as they do. One member of our party was sick during our stay and they went far above and beyond to help in every way that they could. The days flew by and I would recommend the week long stay if you have the time and the resources. Breakfast and dinner were fantastic sit down meals at Potlatch (the dining room building) and I already miss the DIY sandwiches on home baked bread with fresh meats and roasted vegetables that we took along on our hikes. The three levels of hike (foray, moderate and strenuous) had something for everyone and were a highlight for me. We stayed up late to bike to Wonder Lake to go canoeing and fishing because we couldn't bear to miss one of the hikes. Plus they had great gear for you to borrow like gaiters, backpacks, mud boots, trekking poles and the like. And the evening programs by staff were stellar. Matt was just brilliant. The detached bathrooms (outhouses, but not what you'd think) were tough on those who have to go several times a night, but they are immaculately clean and well maintained.

Coming all the way from the East Coast, and loving mountains, hiking and wilderness places (a must for Camp Denali), we chose this (and yes, we booked a year + in advance) because it seemed we would find a true Denali wilderness experience here.

Wow, we were not disappointed - in fact, we were overwhelmed, it was so much more than we ever imagined it could be!! There is no price that can be put on our experience here at Camp Denali!

The bus ride in, in pouring rain I might add, was the start - necessitating a picnic under the awning - very clever, attaching a huge tarp/awning between two parallel parked buses, and a yummy, healthy picnic underneath! Then many wildlife sightings along the way, in rain (who knew?) Grizzlies - a big guy, Mom & cubs, a Toklat "blond" grizzly, Bull & Cow Moose, Caribou, Dall sheep.

And then the thrill of Denali coming out of the clouds as the bus climbed the hill to the camp!! In fact it cleared off that night and the next, resulting in us watching the "Late Show" from the big window of our cabin both nights.

As far as cabins and the staff and the food - there is but one word - superb!!

Cabins - elegant-rustic, squeaky clean, cozy, all you need for a fire anytime, gas hotplate and kettle with all the fixings, and huge views. Outhouses, very clean and dare I say, cute?

Food - gourmet, delicious, reindeer sausage for breakfast with huge slabs of french toast, dinner, salmon over polenta with shrimp sauce, etc. etc. Lunches for the trail - healthy, and huge yummy cookies!

Staff - Wonderful! and knowledgeable. Three levels of hikes available, all with Naturalist/Guide. Jeff's moderate hikes that weekend were great - even "thrashing through the alders"! All seem to have degrees in botany or biology and a huge love for this land, plus a desire and ability to share it with everyone. I loved our hike on the tundra a little beyond Eielson Center - I learned so much about the tundra and this wilderness!
Also don't miss the evening presentations on various topics!

This is definitely a bucket list place, and not for everyone, but we started missing it the minute we left, and are already trying to figure out how to get back. Simon and Jenna, and staff, Thank you for an awesome three days!

Room Tip: We were in "Discovery" cabin. Since this is the oldest frame cabin, it had running (cold...

If you want to have the best wilderness experience 90 miles deep in Denali NP, then Camp Denali/North Face Lodge is the place to be. We stayed 3 days at NFL and 4 days at CD.

North Face Lodge is an inn deep in the wilderness, with all of the facilities that you would expect (except for telephone, radio, TV), including gourmet meals and guided nature treks each day. Spectacular scenery and wildlife are experienced on the 7 hour drive in (including stops and a one hour picnic), and on each day. Canoes are available down at Wonder Lake, on a calm day, and bicycles are available for those looking for an alternative to hiking. If you are lucky, the weather will open up for a view of the 20,000 ft majestic Mt McKinley/Denali sometime during your stay.

Camp Denali is an adjacent lodge owned and operated by the same owners and staff, but instead of an inn, it consists of a series of log cabins situated up in the hillside above NFL, along with large buildings for dining, for nature presentations, and for showers and library. The cabins each have a potbelly stove, propane lamps and hot plate, outside running water and an very clean outhouse for a more rustic setting. The gourmet meals and the nature treks are all run by the same very capable and informative staff. Both CD/NFL were the ideal getaways.

We had a fantastic time, as we did three years before, and will likely do it again sometime in the not too distant future. It was fairly cold this time (mid June). Next time we will aim for late August, when it is warmer and the colors are spectacular. But be forewarned, reservations must be made well in advance to get what you want. CD/NFL are just that popular with those who want to experience the best of one of the last wilderness frontiers in the US.

Room Tip: Plan to make reservations well in advance of your stay.
