This is by far the most expensive place in which i have ever stayed and even though it was a stretch for me to stay there I would do it again in a heartbeat. The rooms are pretty basic but better than similar park lodges at which my wife and I had stayed before. The food was excellent. The guided hikes that we took were all well chosen and the highlight of our stay. The guides were very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna and the geology of the place. All the staff were friendly and helpful. My only criticism of the place is that for the money you pay they ought to provide a pack lunch for your travel out.
Most of the guests are wealthy but even if you are not (and I am not) I would highly recommend that you stay here if you possibly can. Your enjoyment of Denali and knowledge of it will be enhanced if you can do it.

Stayed here for 3 nights in the second half of August, and managed to see the park in sun, rain and snow. The staff overall was wonderful, and the food surprisingly delicious given how far you are from supplies. Since the drive in/out is so long, I would suggest staying 4 nights to give you one more day in the park. Views along the park road are beautiful, and we saw caribou, bears, wolves and dall sheep between the various trips. Both walks we took with lodge guides traversed great scenery, but do plan ahead for all types of weather. One of the guides on the hike failed to establish a good rythm for a group of hikers with various abilities and interests, the only down side to the entire stay. The lodge itself sits in a valley, so Camp Denali up on the ridge has the better view of these sister lodgings. However, I'm fond of inside plumbing, so the choice was an easy one and I had no regrets of the choice. It is pricy, but worth it. It is probably not a great place for younger children, who would likely get bored on the bus rides in/out and not find enough to entertain them at the lodge. Teens interested in the outdoors would do fine.

We have stayed at this property twice now and this time came with two grand children. The site of the camp is ideal: near an active beaver lodge, near Wonder Lake, near the former mining town of Kantishma, and in site of Denali. The lodge has a bus trip in and out of the park on Friday and Sunday, so you can stay for three or four nights or longer. The cost is significant, about $500 per person daily, but if you can afford it, the value is well worth it. With a staff of over 50 professionals, you can see where your dollars go.

There are two different properties owned by the Cole family. We stayed at North Face Lodge which has reasonable motel style rooms with electricity and complete bathrooms. Camp Denali is higher up with an even better view of Denali and individual cabins with more primitive conveniences. Both facilities have excellent meals prepared by professional cooks. Also the two groups combine for planned daily hikes at three levels. Wilderness forays involve several short walks from a van focusing on flora and fauna. Intermediate hikes may be 3-6 miles and involve some elevation gain. The advanced hikes then are a bit more challenging for the truly fit.

There are two competing properties in Kantishna. The Cole properties have several advantages. They are actively run by the owners. The views are superier. They have permission to take their buses directly into the wilderness area for hikes. The staff is large and includes long term veterans of Denali and the outdoors.

The August 23 review gives a good description, so I won't duplicate that. I'd just like to second what the reviewer said - the staff are wonderful! They are not just knowledgeable about the "charismatic megafauna" everyone comes to see - our guides were excellent birders, knew almost all plants down to species for those interested in the scientific names, and there was even a lichen specialist there the weekend we stayed who could get lichens down to species! There is an active beaver pond within easy walking distance.

The requirement of staying several nights makes sense given the long bus ride to get in. Also, you will definitely see more wildlife on a longer stay! The animals don't appear like clockwork so it's important to spend enough time.

The food is very good (though that's not what you come for), the rooms are clean and comfortable (not romantic with single beds). But what really makes this place special is the staff and the setting. It's a whole different experience than staying in GlitterGulch at the Park Entrance, and well worth the high price.

At the end of the road in Denali National Park wilderness, is a wonderful lodge. The main lodge, which contains the dining room, sitting room, and library is beautiful and very tastefully done. There is a very large fireplace, which welcomed and warmed us when we came in during a rain storm, and large comfortable furniture, and wonderful books to read about the wilderness.
The food is also very good, and there is a greenhouse where many of the vegetables and herbs are grown.
The staff, however, is the best thing about this lodge. They are all naturalists and specialists in the wildlife and plants that live in this pristine wilderness, and they share their knowledge with the guests in many ways. They lead hikes, wildlife expeditions and give lectures, and do this most graciously.
Although the rooms are tiny, they all have flush toilets and hot showers, despite the remote location, and on a clear day, a magnificent view of Mt. McKinley is seen.
This lodge is very expensive, but this experience is worth every penny.
