“Beautiful place to stay”
Reviewed 12 October 2013

The Denali Mountain Morning is next to a creek and surrounded by trees, really a beautiful place. We just made one dorm with two bunker beds private. The room was clean and cozy. My only complaint is that there was only a small heater in the room, which did not really make the room warm. I know it was August, but the night of Denali at August were still chilly. The staffs there are pretty friendly. The kitchen and dinning room at Octagon are clean and convenient. We didn't have private bathroom, the public bathroom was good. Overall, I highly recommend this place for your stay outside Denali National Park.

Hello;
Thanks so much for staying with us and commenting on our service and facilities. We are listening. Because of your comment and the comments of some other guests about the warmth in the rooms, we are taking a fresh look at the heating.
Normally the heat is more than enough, but it seems it might not be when we get unusually cold weather. In your case it may have been the heater was giving up. It failed and had to be replaced later in the summer.
We would love to hear from people about the heat in the cabins and rooms to help us understand fully and any advice, as always, is greatly appreciated. You can send comments to stay@denalihostel.com and put heat in the subject.
Thanks again for your comments and I hope you enjoyed Alaska!

This was my first hostel experience and it was awesome! I stayed in Yanert for 3 nights, it was nice cozy cabin with 3 bunks. I loved my stay there, everyone was nice and the shuttle service was very convenient. At first i was a bit concerned about the shuttle schedule but it worked out, since i ended up spending all of my awake time at the park :). The cafe across the street is nice to get a quick bite! If i ever visit Denali again, I will definitely stay here!

Hello and thank you so much for your kind words. This year we had a bit of everything it seemed. A late thaw and frozen septic and failed water pressure tank was our start, but then we had nice warm temperatures. The combination however must have been perfect for mosquito proliferation as Denali was hit by more of those little suckers than most can remember. You couldn't even find bug spray in Alaska for a while.
Then we experienced an unusual amount of equipment problems and failures. Our oil heater leaked oil for a few days until we found the source and fixed it. That was a sad case for those here then as the smell wasn't pleasant. We added another water heater to accommodate our expanded shower house. It was a bad unit that caused more total failures than added hot water. We couldn't return it, so we had to figure out the internal issues and fix them. It was difficult and took most of the summer. For that we are sorry too. Then just as it got cold in the fall, our shower house furnace failed. I am still working on that, but it will either be fixed or replaced before we open next year.
So as you can see it was a trying year at times, but the wonderful guests kept their chins up and enjoyed themselves and their vacations despite these minor setbacks. It is always wonderful to serve an understanding and accepting bunch of people. And again, I apologize to all who were impacted. It is not our standard.
Thanks again to everyone who stayed with us and we look forward to seeing new faces and you returners next summer! And thank you for your comments and helping us earn our second 'excellence certificate' here.
Remember, if something seems like it isn't working or isn't as it should be - TELL US THEN! And everyone is always welcome to give us suggestions to improve.
And one last thank you to the great staff of 2014!

Really like this Hostel, in nature, wildness. Cabin we lived was nice, kitchen and dinning room are clean, tidy, and comfort!
Only thing is that the bathrooms were a little bit not warm enough in Sept.(we lived there in Sept. 6 to 10, 2013).

Hi and thanks for reviewing us on TripAdvisor! We're happy to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you found the facilities to be clean and comfortable. We're sorry that the shower house was a bit chilly- we found out near the end of the season that we were having a problem with one of our furnaces in there and we fixed the issue as quickly as possible, but we apologize if it had a negative impact on your stay. We do have a member of our staff on-call at all times, and we hope that all of our guests will use that resource as necessary so that we can correct any issues that may come up as soon as we are made aware of them. Again, thanks for the review- we hope to see you back in Denali in the future!

Highly recommend staying here. I had a bunk in the Octagon, which is really close to a perfectly adequate and clean bathroom reserved for that room only. Not entirely sure if the bottom sheets are cleaned after each guest? But overall I'd say it's quite clean. Kitchen is gorgeous.

A cabin by the lovely creek would be ideal. Staying here for a few nights just to relax, read, write, and contemplate your navel would be great. Restaurant across the street is pretty good.

It's 13 miles to the park entrance, so decide whether you want to rely on their shuttle or rent a car. I found the manager during the early evening pick up at the park, when I was signed up for the later one (5:30 v. 9:30) and she seemed a bit flustered/annoyed/wary? at first. I think sticking around for a few minutes for people would be nice. It was only a minute or two past 5:30 and she was like "OK let's go." But she ended up being helpful and professional generally. I think she just wants to stick to the schedule.

Hi there and thank you for taking the time to review us on TripAdvisor. We're happy to read that you enjoyed your stay overall. First off, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize personally for any negativity you may have experienced on the hostel shuttle service. I am the person who picked you up that day, and while driving the shuttle and making sure we have room for and have collected all of our passengers in a timely manner can be stressful for whoever is working, it is more important to us that all of our guests have a positive and happy experience. I am truly very sorry for letting that affect your experiences. That is unacceptable and inexcusable on my part, and I will try to be more aware going forward from this point. Once again, I'm sorry. In regards to your other comments, we do provide every single bunk and cabin with clean linens prior to each new check-in. Being a hostel, our linens are used heavily and perhaps you had clean sheets on your bed that were a little bit older/worn, but we did just go through all of our sheets and towels and got rid of any that seemed worn or frayed, so hopefully this will not be an issue going forward. I can promise you, and all guests past and future, clean sheets and a clean hostel, though! Thanks again for taking the time to review us here, and for giving us the opportunity to respond to your feedback. We hope we will see you the next time your travels bring you to Alaska!

Very pleasantly surprised how nice this was! Only the second hostel we have ever stayed in and the first was one we also stayed in on this trip to Alaska (down in Anchorage). Stunning location near brook and surrounded by huge mountains. Easy drive into Denali National Park. Stayed in two different cabins over three days (only changed due to availability issue) and both were very clean and comfortable. Bathrooms clean and common kitchen and lounge area warm, clean and inviting. Met people from all over the world. Staff helpful and courteous. Would definitely stay again.

Such a nice little spot with lots of stand-along cabins nestled in trees. Each was a super-short stroll from the main lodge/showers with the kitchen and lots of bathrooms. All common areas appear to be cleaned on a daily basis. Tons of utensils, pots/pans in kitchen. Large tables to sit and eat comfortably.

We stayed in a room with bunks that was attached to the office and another bunk room. We heard folks tromping around the adjoining room at times, but didn't keep us up at all.

Staff was very friendly, accommodating and helpful.

This is a great place! Cabins are rustic, but clean and comfortable. We were in Highwater and loved the creek burbling outside our door. The creek was loud, which I loved, but might be distracting if you like it quiet. It isn't big, but we didn't spend much time there so it didn't mater much. I liked that it was further from the Octagon than Splatter Rock. My mom stayed in Splatter Rock and liked having a little more space. She was a few steps closer to a bathroom.

Octagon was busy some nights/mornings and the kitchen isn't huge, but it was well stocked. There was a large Indian family that came in and took the place over and cooked some really stinky stuff. They didn't make much room for anyone else. Another night a large tour group came in and it was difficult to get around in the kitchen. We ate most meals in restaurants, so we weren't as frustrated with the kitchen situation as we would have been if we had tried to cook every night. There could have been a few more parking spots.

Bathrooms/showers were clean and functional every day. Staff was helpful and sweet. Restaurants across the street were decent and provided sack lunches for our trip to Wonder Lake. It generally took about 20 minutes to get to the gates of the park from the hostel. Just far enough away for some peace and quiet.

We had a wonderful stay here. I will absolutely return to the hostel if I go back to Denali.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to review us here! We're so happy to read that you enjoyed your stay in our Highwater and Splatter Rock Cabins. We like to call the Highwater our "backpackers dream" cabin- it's smaller in size (and therefore in price) than some of our other cabins, but still offers the peace and quiet of a private cabin, for those who are looking for an alternative to our dormitory accommodations. And you really can't beat the soothing sounds of Carlo Creek right outside of your window! We hope to one day expand our kitchen and common areas, as it does make an impact when we have large groups cooking in there all at the same time. Thanks again for the review and for your feedback. See you next time!
