“Review of cafe only. Decent food at incredibly high price.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2013

Stopped by one day for lunch. Upon entering property the cafe is easy to spot because it looks like a double wide trailer wearing a log cabin for a roof. I am pretty sure it is not a trailer but it has that look to it. The interior is very nice, open, and charming. For lunch we ordered 1 quiche, 1 order of french toast, and 2 beverages. The total for these items was over $30. I am from Alaska and am used to paying high prices to eat out. However, the portions were somewhat small. A single macaroon cookie costs about $4. The quiche was good. The french toast wasn't bad although some would think it too soggy.

I probably will never go again. It was just something to check out.

We arrived just before dinner at this incredible Alaskan home in the woods. What a wonderful new property, .5 mile up a one lane gravel road. It looks just as one might imagine an Alaskan resort would look like. There is the lake with no other houses in sight, the beautifully appointed lodge with handmade stained glass, quilt art and other personal artistic touches, the cafe below also with art everywhere and finally our little cabin in the woods with its own easy start Franklin Stove, windows with wildflower views (not other cabins OR the parking lot!), a big cozy bed and a well-functioning bathroom with heated tile floor. This is no rustic experience but a romantic tryst in 2013!! We enjoyed our chats with Donna, the superior food and the tour of all that makes Tonglen Lake Lodge the best "hotel" stay that we enjoyed in Alaska. Thanks so much! Christine and Jim, Washington, DC

Room Tip: There didn't seem to be any "poor" rooms - as all are individual cabins built in 2012.

We stayed with Donna and the team at Tonglen Lake Lodge for 5 nights on our trip to Denali and we were so, so, SO glad we did. If you are looking for a comfortable, cozy, peaceful and absolutely beautiful place to stay in Denali that is just far enough off the beaten path to get you away from the huge swarms of name tag wearing cruise shippers that flock to the area in the summer, look no further. The lodge is easy to get to from the main highway, yet far enough removed as to avoid any traffic noise. The location affords you the ability to easily access the park, area tours, and restaurants without a lengthy drive. The cabins are brand new and very very nice and comfortable, plenty of space and privacy to settle in for a few days stay and a great place to come back to after a day of adventuring. The onsite bakery and cafe are both convenient and delicious, and the staff are there to support your activities and desires as needed. Donna, the owner, greets each guest and assists with recommendations for activities and restaurants to compliment your stay, all of which we found very helpful. When we return to visit Denali again, we won't even consider staying anywhere else, and you shouldn't either. Tonglen Lake Lodge is truly an Alaskan gem!

Wonderful place to visit. The facilities are new, the food is outstanding, and the staff couldn't be more helpful. There are about ten recently completed cabins which are very neat and well done. The onsite bakery is fabulous, and people come from all around just for the breakfasts.

Room Tip: Ask if you can see the owner put her dogs through an agility performance. Amazing.

We enjoyed the new Tonglen Lake Lodge -- interesting cabins, great breakfast and cafe with an art gallery, and a wonderful team that makes everything happen. It was a pleasure to meet Donna, Erika, and Anne, and get a feel for the Alaskan way. We relied on Donna's recommendations for dinners and activities, and were very pleased with our experiences. Tonglen Lake Lodge made our stay at Denali very rewarding.

Although I have not stayed over night at Tonglen, I have visited the Cafe and Bakery associated with Tonglen Lodge several times during my recent visit to Denali National Park, and it is amazing. The coffee was smooth and didn't need syrups to make it great. The chai tasted homemade. Oh, and the chocolate brioche and scones, were melt in ones mouth good. The attention to detail in handmade furniture upstairs in the lounge area was appealing and comfortable. The tour of the cabins showed the same attention to detail and comfort. On my next trip to Denali, I will definitely be making a point of staying there.
The cabins are located near the Tonglen Lake, with wonderful views.

Opening Day at New Tonglen Lake Resort with fresh pastries, lox and bagles baked right there at Tonglen Lake. We woke up a moose as we drove into the resort. The place is beautiful and with its attention to detail.it stands out when compared to the average Alaska lodging. Friendly, good food, with hand made furniture in the rooms, beautiful views of the mountains and lake. Special.

Room Tip: Just ask for a nice, quiet beautiful room.
