“Nice little hike”

Savage River Loop Trail

We didn't have a lot of time to spend in the National Park, so we drove here and spent a couple of hours hiking in this area, on the loop trail (which was quite busy) and then hiked up the road about a mile past the stopping-point for cars. Some great views of the mountains with the Savage River running thru the canyon. We didn't see Denali or any animals in this particular area.

We took the free shuttle from the visitor center. Had a great tour of the park. Our driver was knowledgeable aond gave us lots of information. The driver helped identify wildlife along the way and would stop for photos. Several restroom stops along the way. You can get off at each stop and explore. Buses run about every 30-45 minutes. Lots of snow on the ground in May

We enjoyed this relatively flat walk along a river. Good views. Wildlife. Self guided. Trail is good.

The bus trip and loop walk were fabulous. It's any easy, free shuttle which takes about 45 minutes from the Bus Depot. The loop is a well prepared, almost flat walk with charming Artic Ground Squirrels and other wildlife along the trail.

The 15-mi drive into the park (farthest you can go by car) + 2 mile loop offered incredible views and was unlike anything we've ever done before! We didn't have time to do the full bus ride into the park, so this short trip gave us a taste of Denali. And...we arrived first thing in the morning (8am in June) and had the entire trail to ourselves! It was a little scary being completely alone in the wilderness (and seeing signs that bears frequent the area), but we made it through the loop without any encounters. This is a must-do in Denali, and if your time is limited make sure you make it to Savage River.
