Owner description: This 8-mile stretch of road boasts a number of stunning views of the Canyon. Do it by car, foot or during peak season, May to September, by bus: shuttles run by the Park Service that stop at key points and allow you to hop on and off at your leisure.

We visited in the winter, and were able to get down this West rim road without the mandatory shuttle. We also lucked out by avoiding some of the icy roads that occurred throughout the season. We enjoyed the drive, especially seeing the herds of elk, and the hermits rest historical buildings at the end of the road. We also were able to see the village from one of the overlooks.

In January you can take your personal car along this south rim drive to the building at the end, Hermit's Rest. The old building designed out of stones and wood is beautiful, with a huge fireplace. There are several lookouts along the way, each with a new view of the canyon. We were there on a sunny day with no snow, and no problems on the road. There were multiple groups of elk grazing right near the road. You could watch them as long as you wanted; and some photographers getting way too close to the wild animals! This time of year there were very few people each place we stopped; it was quiet and very impressive.

We drove from Grand Canyon village to Hermits Rest, stopping at multiple lookouts along the way. Signage is excellent and I learned a lot about the geology of the canyon but also the human presence from Havapai Indians ages ago to the explorers like Powell. All fascinating complements to the truly awesome views. There was ice on some of the less travelled paths but all the viewpoints were clear. We stopped at Hermits Rest for a snack. It's worth the stop as it is one of the buildings designed by Mary Coulter. It is a charming site. In the summer a shuttle bus runs along this drive and cars are not allowed.

This is a wonderful drive in the winter if it is not snowing. It had snowed 2 days before but the road was cleared and only icy if the sun couldn't reach the pavement. Didn't realize that it was only open Nov 30 until into the spring. Took 2 elderly parents and only drove & stopped at overlooks without leaving the car - it was still an AMAZING view. Glad I went when the buses weren't the only choice in seeing this awesome site. Went to the SkyBridge as well and this is much preferred to it & sooo much cheaper. It is one of the MUST sees of the world & I've been lots of places.. There is just nothing like seeing the real thing. Photos can't do it justice. Had high expectations and it met them all and then some.

We use a guide from Wildland who took us out to Hermit's Rest for a sunset cookout. It was spectacular and worth the drive.
