Coming in on the East side and starting with the Watch Tower is an excellent way to get your first views of GCNP! Many view points and hikes along the way-spectacular!

“One of the world's most scenic drives”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2012

Anybody who visits the Grand Canyon NP - South Rim - with his or her own or rented vehicle would be well advised to enter by one gate (east or south) and exit by the other so as not to miss the east rim drive - aka Desert View Drive. To note: east rim drive refers to the eastern section of the whole rim drive which stretches over 30 miles from the east entrance and Desert View to Hermit's Rest at the western end. Grand Canyon Village with the rim lodges divides the rim drive into an eastern and a western section. Whereas the western section along Hermit Road is only accessible by (free) shuttle bus between May and October, any point east of Yaki Point is only accessible with your own vehicle.
This western sections boasts some of the most spectacular viewpoints, among them Desert View itself with the historic Watchtower, Navajo and Lipan Point which show longer stretches of the Colorado River far, far below, Moran Point from which the north rim is ‘pretty close’, i.e. a ‘mere’ 8 miles across the mighty, mighty crevice. Last but by no means least, Grandview Point offers sensational panoramic vistas across infinity, it seems.

“Great views!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2012

We drove from the south rim over to the east rim and stopped at several of the overlooks along the way. To say that they are majestic is an understatement. The east rim visitor area is very well done by the park service. I would highly recommend it.

“Good trip for the family”

Not everyone can hike so this is a good option for mobility impaired people. We took our mother in law here and she was able to see the Canyon easily.

“Amazing landscape”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 May 2012

The watchtower was great. It's a 25 mile drive out to the east end of the Canyon, with a bunch of lookouts along the way to stop at. It's amazing that you get out of your car and there it is - in all it's awe is the Grand Canyon. Breathtaking - worth the drive!!!
