Thunderbird Lodge

Thunderbird lodge sits right on the rim. No need for a view room as you can just walk outside and see it for yourself! Frig in room, free wifi, close to all hikes, comfy beds, nice decor, new bathrooms, and AC is a plus. Very nice for a national park!

First of all, the location is awesome, and the view, though not as spectacular as one would hope, is a nice one. The main advantage, obviously, is the chance to be right at the canyon early in the morning or late in the evening with minimal walking.

The rooms are nice, the fridge is a plus and the wi-fi worked fine. Very comfortable beds.

On check-out, I noticed that the second night was charged at a rate $20 higher than in my printed reservation. The clerk tried to explain that the rate was higher the second night. I showed him my print-out. The clerk said the second night included tax. That was obviously wrong, as I pointed out to him. Then he mumbled something about a rate change and thatan "email about that had been sent". While I have never received such an email, it seems strange a reputable hotel would try to raise rates AFTER a resewrvation has been made. At this point, a supervisor intervened and took the extra $20 off the bill.

I have no idea whether this whole charade was a result of me being foreign, a very strange company policy or a personal blunder by the clerk. Just keep that in mind, because the hotel's rates are high enough withur hidden costs.

Location is great: the Grand Canyon is just a stone’s throw away. Unfortunately, there was no view out of our room. Good AC, clean room, several restaurants in walking distance, shuttle bus around the corner. All hotels close to Grand Canyon, such as this, are quiet pricey. At Thunderbird the value for money could be much better. However, would recommend it, but we will book another and cheaper hotel at next visit (at the entrance and on the way are several hotels).

My wife booked a room for us and our teenage son. The lodge was built in the 1960s and has the style of architecture to show it. Rooms weren't huge but made up for it by being a 30 second walk to the South Rim of the canyon and the Arizona Room restaurant where we had dinner one night. They did have a slight dormitory feel to me. We didn't get the room for the amenities but for the location. The first floor had a partial view of the canyon. I read that you can get a better view from the second floor so plan ahead if you want the full package. This place made our trip to the canyon even more memorable than staying outside it. It was amazing waking up and walking to the canyon rim to sip my coffee.

Our room's windows faced the rim trail and had an awesome view. The hotel itself on outside doesn't have that 'lodge' look but the room's do and was very, very nice. Close walk to lodge restaurants. Our first night at this lodge there were 3 moose right outside the door on the grass. It was awesome! Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with windows facing the rim trail.

we (a family of 4 with 2 teens) were originally supposed to stay at the yavapai lodge for 2 nights but after finding out that they wouldn't be able to put us in a room with air conditioning and one of the staff members insisting that it was mentioned on the reservation that there wouldn't be air conditioning in the room and after showing her that it wasn't mentioned she managed to move us to a room at the thunderbird lodge with a view of the canyon on the 1st floor without having to pay an extra fee. The room at the thunderbird lodge was great, it was hot when we were there and it was definitely great to have the air conditioning. the only con would be that we would have preferred a shower over a bathtub but overall it was a good stay.

We reserved in advance to get a 2nd floor canyon view room. Lower level is too close to walkers on rim trail. Updated bath was nice. Air cooler was a little weak - but that was our only minus. I liked the coffee and big mugs. Convenient location for hiking, sunrise and sunset. Would definitely stay again.
