We stayed in a small cabin and it was fine as we were out all day hiking. The Lodge itself is wonderfully historic and beautiful. The restaurant has a wonderful setting expecially for sunset with its large windows. The food was very good and priced ok.

We booked for 3 nights and got a Frontier Cabin one night, motel room one night and a Frontier Cabin the last night. The reception staff (like everyone else we met) were friendly, welcoming and helpful - we arrived about 12, went to ask the check-in time and were immediately given a cabin (In contrast to the S Rim where the reaction was “Check-in is at 4, come back then.”)
On the basis of our experience, I would definitely go for the motel rather than the cabins next time. The motel rooms are bigger, better equipped and quieter (As other people have noted the two halves of the cabins are separated by only a door and at one point I distinctly heard "Look, no-one else knows we're not married." Wrong!) The view from the motel was better (forest, instead of the back of another cabin) and - it's cheaper. Our first cabin was OK, although it took forever for hot water to come through; in our second cabin the cold faucet dripped, and the coffee maker, radio and light sat on a table with their cables hanging uselessly down - the only power outlet was behind the bed on the opposite side of the room. And again it took forever for hot water to come through - they must waste an awful lot of water. The basic nature of the cabins is part of their charm – I don’t want Wi-Fi or TV – but I don’t think hot water and privacy are too much to ask. However, as long as there is nothing else within miles and they are fully booked months in advance, there is obviously little incentive for change.
Be aware that if you want to eat in the dining room you may need to book well in advance. We booked dinner 2 days ahead and were offered before 5:15 or after 8:15. However, the food in the Deli is basic but good, and if like us you are happy with coffee and pastries for breakfast, the Coffee Shop / Saloon is excellent.
The location is unbeatable, the staff are great, and if we had been in the motel all 3 nights I would have given it 5* but the nights in the cabins definitely pull it down.

Stayed in a Frontier Cabin with a double and twin bed. Rooms were very clean and updated. Service at check in was great. The rooms do not have

The West Terrace is a great place to have a drink of choice and view the canyon.

We also ate dinner at the Grand Canyon Cookout Experience (i.e. Chuck Wagon Style Dinner). The food was great and the entertainment by Woodie and Cleta-Jane Cochran.

We booked a Pioneer Cabin a year in advance with a rim view. We did not want adjoining walls with other travelers as I am a light sleeper. So we booked the 2 bedroom. We invitied another couple who happiliy were able to make it. The set up is great as our cabin had an entry for each bedroom with a small 3/4 bath in between. This allowed us to get up a different times and kept it quiet and private for each couple. Also had a coffee maker and small fridge. Although rustic, it was clean, and everything was in working order. Love the North Rim--so much more laid back. Snack bar available. You can store some food and wine in the fridge. Had dinner at the restaurant which was surprisingly good. Although we were not able to get a window seat, the views are spectacular from any place in the room. The lodge is great to hang out at and watch the sunset. It was a very memorable trip.

it's the only place to stay even remotely close to the rim. We stayed in a western cabin, by far the nicest and most recently renovated of the options available. These cabins should be reserved at least six months in advance, a year if you want a rim view cabin. Also, payment must be made when reservation is made.
Our only complaint was because there was no AC in the cabins we had to sleep with the windows open, and people walking by late at night and early in the morning kept us from getting a good nights sleep! Ask for a cabin out of the way of the main walkways.
