“Awesome Setting Quaint Accomodation”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

Tucked away literally on the rim of the Grand Canyon the Grand Canyon Lodge mixes sophisticated eating with cabins echoing of the camps of our childhood with wood cabins, log furniture and cabin interiors. Washrooms are modern and all accommodations come with power outlets. The Lodge House comes with fantastic sitting areas outside and in to look over 20 miles to the south rim, a fine restaurant and gift shop, post office and bar Guaranteed fresh air and the smell of ponderosa pines will linger. There are two ways to get to the Lodge, drive of some 4.5 hours from the South Rim or hiking across the Canyon, of which I accomplished the latter.

Room Tip: all cabins are equivalent but advance planning is required

We stayed at the North Rim in May, 2014. Post R2R hike!! We were in cabin 82--there were 4 adults. The cabin was small but cozy, cute, and clean!! Again, the pillows weren't top notch and the beds weren't the most comfortable, but aftering hiking 12+ hours, it did the job!!! The bathroom was horribly small!! The majority of us are 6foot and up, (not obese either) and man was it hard to move in that shower. We had to bend to get our heads wet and when we did, you were bumping into the walls!! Ewwww! Only complaint. The atmosphere is superb, the staff all very friendly and the views are to die for!!! Will definitely stay there again!!!

Quieter than the busy South Rim lodges, the North Rim is a nice getaway. Rooms are actually spacious clean cabins, the lodge itself is clean, beautiful, and well managed. The restaurants are much better than on the South Rim (different operator).

It is lo tech though: no TV, no wifi except at the general store 2 miles down the road (not even in the lodge itself) and no to mediocre cell phone coverage (voice and very slow data with Verizon, nothing (of course) with AT&T. There are room and pay phones, though :)

We spent three nights in a Pioneer Cabin at the North Rim Lodge. The views and access to the North Rim were superb! The ranger led programs are conducted outside on the terrace, and everything's within walking distance - Visitors Center, Gift Shop, Saloon, Deli, and many overlook points along the canyon rim.

The room and bathroom were tiny and cramped. The sinks were half the size of a normal sink, and there was no shower curtain which meant the entire bathroom got wet. We know these are rustic cabins, but for over $180/night we've stayed in much nicer accommodations. They also advertised laundry options at the lodge, but we discovered the laundry facility is actually two miles up the road at the campgrounds.

There are very limited dining options as well. The only restaurant, the lodge dining hall, was absolutely packed every evening. If you didn't make reservations you waited about an hour. If you made reservations, you still may find yourself waiting 15 - 20 minutes. Service was also spotty. We realize they're busy, but good service was still rare. We strongly recommend asking for Allyson is you're there this season. She was great!

The lobby of the lodge was always absolutely packed with people, many of whom were simply standing around and disgruntled because they either didn't make reservations for lodging or dinner, and couldn't get a cabin or table. The South Rim is supposedly 9 times busier. If that's the case, I seriously doubt we'd visit the South Rim outside of Winter.

Though it may add another 23 miles to your drive, we'd recommend finding some place in Kaibab to the North. If you plan to stay here, make reservations for lodging and dinner far in advance.

One of the worst places we ever stayed overnight. Unfortunately the Lodge is the only option. The room we ended up with was in what they refer to as the motel. No TV, no wifi, no AC, no cell signal...and the bathroom was the smallest I have ever seen. Then to top it off the room was not well cleaned. Pillow cases were stained and had long hairs stuck to them. Since we were there the first night of the season.....??? The trek from the room to the main lodge was about a half mile. Meals at the Lodge were, as expected, very average at best.

Room Tip: Try to get a large cabin...but don't expect even average accommodations.

We chose the North Rim to be away from the crowds. We did not think we could get a cabin on such short notice, but fortunately we did, and are so glad we decided to stay in the park. The Lodge is lovely, the dinner was great, the staff was delightful. It was a very relaxing trip, with walks that the whole family could easily do. Though the cabin itself was small, it was cozy and comfortable. We did not spend much time in it anyway, as the views outside at the Lodge were so stunning we spent most of our time away from the cabin. If we return, we will definitely stay here again.

You just can't beat the views from the lodge, the patio, and the nearby trails. We stayed in a cabin behind the visitor center, which was both roomy and quite cozy in the cool weather with a gas fireplace. The cabins are quite close together and yet they still felt private.
