“A Real Frontier Cabin on the Rim”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

Yes, it is small. Yes, it is quaint. But, it is clean and has a private bathroom with a shower. There is no TV. There is no telephone. But, you came to see the majesty of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon - and it is majestic! Be sure to get up early for the sunrise. It was at 5:23 AM and we were not the only early risers to see this awesome scene displayed first on the horizon then splashed among the canyon walls. This is a wonderful country and we are grateful to be able to enjoy it's beauty.

Room Tip: All cabins are basic and you will remember it forever.

Cute cabin - since we are a family of six, we need to have two cabins. Unfortunately, it is not possible to have all the kids in one room so we had share with one of our children, which is not ideal in terms of privacy. We were not allowed either to take three room (one cabin and a half) because kids under a certain age must be under parental supervision. The room is cute yet a bit dark. The historical part of the lodge is amazingly beautiful. Great views on the park.

Room Tip: Try to stay away from the main paths - several people wake up early to hike before the heat strikes...

I would recommend that anyone who is thinking of visiting the North Rim, which in itself is a good decision, definitely books this lodge in advance to enjoy the park in all it's glory. We booked early, before departure and were allocated a motel type room, which was more than adequate and getting up in the morning to humming birds, and chipmunks was fantastic for wildlife enthusiasts. We decided early on that we wanted to stay an extra night, luckily after asking on an ongoing basis we were able to stay an extra night. I note other people have commented on the lack of services, etc., however seeing such an amazing wonder, cut off from the outside world I would suggest is a real benefit in this day of technology.

We had a cabin which was clean and neat and rustic-feeling. There wasn't a lot of space and there was no WiFi nor TV, but we didn't care about that. There was a little porch to sit on, but we never had time to use it. It's nice to be able to walk to the main lodge with its three eating and drinking options and the large balconies overlooking the canyon. You can get a beer at the saloon and then sit on the balcony watching the sun set. There are also ranger talks pretty often in the lodge. Don't expect to drive right up to your cabin. And make your reservations many months in advance.

We really enjoyed our pioneer rim view cabin. We had 4 adults which is really the max for the cabin. Our cabin had a great view of the sunset. We were glad we had brought our camp chairs to sit and enjoy it. According to the literature left in the cabin, the cabins had been built at the same time as the original lodge-1926-7. We had fun imagining what it had been like back then with no running water or electricity! We had come to the north rim to spend time outside hiking and just relaxing and weren't disappointed that we were not in touch with the rest of the world. We were able to send and receive text messages from our room and the lodge. We enjoyed our dinner at the lodge. We also went to the cookout but we were not as impressed with that.

Can't beat the location. Lodge has yester-year charm. Food a bit disappointing (especially since the dining room was booked for dinner - so make your reservations!) but there are a few options on the property. The pub bailed us out - it would be nice if they served burgers and not just pizza. The Lodge patios are magical, but it seems they could upgrade the interior. I would love to be back in the fall and hope they actually get the fireplaces working, but the sunsets are perfect as are the sunrises. We stayed in a cabin with a front door view of the canyon - how can you possibly beat that? The cabins are also from a different time -but have necessary requirements. Listening to the night time rain was quite charming as was seeing the light fog in the distance over the canyon.

Room Tip: Book EARLY! I booked in February for a late July trip.

I loved my little Rim Cabin; the rustic feel very much fitted with the ambiance of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. My experience with the cabin itself isn't five stars as it is small and the bathroom is cramped, there is a lack of powerpoints for charging various devices, and of course, no mod-cons or connectivity with the outside world. BUT that all seems pretty insignificant in the overall schme; the setting, the character of the log cabins, the surrounding nature, the grandeur of the view, the relaxed atmosphere at the lodge... all of that made for such an amazing experience of the Grand Canyon. I hope to return in the future for a much longer stay.
