“Incredible views, average rooms”
Reviewed 5 December 2013

We stayed in the basic room at this hotel since it was only the type available, and we were pleased! Every moment we were in our room we felt like we were wasting precious valuable time looking at the Grand Canyon! If you're going for a short trip, save your money and book a cheaper room, you will want to be outside for everything, sunrise, sunset, night time, during the day...! If you're here for a longer trip, I'd recommend looking at the nicer rooms since time won't be so precious. But definitely stay at this hotel! It's worth the extra money over the neighboring hotels, it's the historic hotel, it has the grandeur and is just a fun place to walk into! 15 feet from the edge of the Grand Canyon? Beat that!

Room Tip: Short trip? Save your money and go with the standard rooms, any time you spend in the room will feel...

After reading reviews of the El Tovar, I was a little nervous. I expected the rooms to be really small and outdated. So I was pleasantly surprised to find a clean, lovely room and bathroom. The bathroom has a vintage feel, but certainly isn't outdated. The room is small, but not strangely so. Besides, you're not at the Grand Canyon to lounge in your room. We stayed on the 2nd floor, and while you don't have Canyon views, the view into the grounds behind the hotel was lovely with snow covered grounds. The lobby has a ski lodge feel with a ever-burning fireplace (in Dec).

We had dinner and breakfast at the El Tovar restaurant and the meals were great - and affordable, when you consider the location. Highly recommend the hotel and restaurant!

I have been going to Grand Canyon for almost 30 years. I highly recommend staying in the village when you can. Most of the times I have visited, I have been able to book a room in one of the lodges. This time, I was able to "upgrade" from a room at Thunderbird to a suite at the El Tovar when we arrived. Even though we weren't really able to enjoy the spacious porch attached to the suite for meals or star gazing because it was very cold and snowing, we still enjoyed the view for at least the time it took to drink a cup of coffee. Despite the fact that it is very, very pricey, the El Tovar is quaint and casual. It is truly a lodge, with small rooms and bathrooms. Don't expect a modern, spacious hotel, but instead what the El Tovar has always been -- the premier hotel at the South Rim from a hundred years ago. Even if you can't stay at there, you should endeavor to eat at least one meal there. The food and service are excellent in all ways. Even though the rooms are very expensive, the price tag at the dining room is not.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a suite if at all possible.

I was lucky enough to stay here twice. First room was 1/2 subterranean level with a view of the back of the lodge's front stairs. With room was well appointed for a national park. If they didn't put in a king bed there would've been more than two feet around the bed for walking space. The bed was nice and comfy but a bit too firm for me. The inner corridors are a bit spooky at night. Everything buttons up around 9 pm, so be sure to bring books, games, etc. to entertain you. The second time we stayed there was last New Year's Eve night. We were upgraded to a suite a top what must've been a screened porch at one time. the view is of the parking lot and the train station, but gave more of a posh feel. The bed is on a dais, there's plenty of room, there's radiant heat in the bathroom, and the bowed out living room has a nice seating arrangement to relax n hang out. Also there's authentic artifacts and art on the walls. P.s. parking at any hotels on the south rim is a pain, so get there early! To be honest the hotel, no matter the room you pick, is not the point, the park is! The food, public areas of the lodge and the canyon is where all the action is.

Room Tip: Best rooms are obviously the ones that over look the canyon. Be sure to book early all rooms go fast...

We spent one night at El Tovar and wished we would have had time to stay longer. The staff was very friendly and helpful every where we went (check-in, lounge, restaurant, gift shop, etc.). We didn't find a grumpy person on the staff. We could have sat on the patio sipping a beverage looking over the canyon for much longer, had it not been a bit on the cool side.

We at in the restaurant and had an excellent meal, all three of us. One thing they didn't say about the restaurant online was that they DO have a children's menu. There have been posts that they don't, which sometimes leads people to believe it's a more adult restaurant, but they did have a kids menu and more than 50% of the tables had kids at them, from toddlers to teenagers. All of our meals were cooked as requested and excellent. In the lounge they recommended their special Pinot Noir, and I was not disappointed, it was good enough to order a second glass with dinner.

If we get back around that way, we'll be staying at El Tovar.

The facilities have a distinctly rustic appearance which goes along with the location nicely.
We had just a standard room with two queen beds. With two queen beds the room is pretty cozy. The bathroom on the other hand was very spacious.

Look at the pictures online to see what to expect. The hotel definitely lived up to my expectations.

Front desk was able to get us from one of the other lodges into this one on our second night. The history in this place is memorable. Great wine list. The wait staff were very personable. Could do without the large TV taking up the space (this is the Grand Canyon, who wants to look at TV). Rooms are small and cozy. Must eat at the lodge.

Room Tip: First floor rooms are nice if you have heavy luggage.
