“Perfect themed hotel for canyon stay”
Reviewed 1 June 2014 via mobile

This is a lovely hotel with great rustic approach that automatically makes you feel associated with the outdoors while being in a hotel. Be prepared for a small room but we felt this was the only negative while the positives greatly outweighed. We would go back again regardless.

Beautiful view of canyon. Wonderful staff. Very close to a few trails.

The hotel is right on the rim of the canyon which for me gives it a four star rating. But the downside to this is perhaps the hotel doesn't have to try too hard.
Parking is horrendous....we were lucky on arrival to grab a spot but this meant dragging our suitcases quite a distance to the hotel...also you do not feel like moving the car again to explore. No lifts in the hotel means lugging heavy suitcases up and down stairs...or you may be lucky and find the one porter.
The common rooms are atmospheric and the dining room lovely.......after sampling food in three other national parks the menu here was a really nice surprise and the service excellent.
Which finally brings us to the bedrooms....ours..temptingly called a terrace room seemed no different from any others and was shabby and worn and a bit smelly. However it wuss clean and OK for two nights.
If we ever returned I think we would go for something a bit more modern and use the free shuttle service to get about

We stayed in the El Tovar for a week in early May, and were very happy with our stay. As the other reviewers have said, mostly that's because of location, location, location. It felt special to stay there. Here are pros and cons:

Pros:
Location
Historic Hotel
Good restaurant
Pretty big, recently renovated (but still period-appropriate) bathroom
Clean
Free coffee & tea in the morning in the common area
Lots of board games put out in the evening in the common area
Very comfortable bed

Cons:
Regular coffee in restaurant & common room was good, but the decaf was terrible
Room was small, no desk or table to use
Parking not guarenteed
When I needed to do laundry, I had to go to the campground laundry room

For our family oriented purposes, we solved the small room by using the common area a lot. There are tables and couches there, and we'd meet up there in the morning for coffee and chatting, and in the evening for our byob cocktail hour and board games. Once we figured that out, I preferred it to when we do all that in our own room at other hotels.

It seemed much better than other places to stay on the rim.

When visiting the Grand Canyon, it makes your stay so much easier and pleasurable if you are able to secure a room at one of the hotels on the South Rim. Of those, the El Tovar, is the queen of grand. I visited her again just last week and realized that even in the midst of summer visitor craziness she is an oasis of calm, dignity and quality. Yes, a room costs more here but the convenience of the bar and an outstanding dining room make it all worthwhile. And of course you will be only a few steps from the incredible views offered from the south rim. While there I had a breakfast, dinner and an after dinner drink in the bar. The food was excellent, the service perfect and the atmosphere hard to match anywhere. The room was spacious, spotless and contained all the amenities, both large and small, that one expects in a first class hotel. I can't wait to visit her again.

We had a standard queen room which was comfortable, spacious and well restored and furnished. Our friends had a standard double and said it was much smaller than ours (which was a bit pricier) just be aware that the difference is not only the bed size but also the room size.

It's unfortunate that this lovely historic hotels offers little to no views of the canyon itself, but it does put you right in the middle of the park, making access to everything you want to do or see so easy.

An absolute delightful place!! I could have pretended to have arrived on horseback and walked into an English Lodge with wooden ceiling and beams, the trophies, warm fireplace and much more. It wasn't in our fortune to have managed rooms here, so I can't tell you anything about that, except the view from some would have been overlooking the Grand Canyon. What we did do is have breakfast before leaving. The service was as expected, warm, attentive and courteous. The pancakes and French toast were nothing less than what one would be served from a hotel that looked so grand and has already been rated as one of the best places to stay at. . I'd say in the world! But then I'm partial to quaint, warm, vintage hotels.

Room Tip: Since you may not get accommodation (you need to make a room reservation well in advance) don't...

just because you are not just next to a metropolitan area is not to say that you can not have a first class hotel in the Grand Canyon Park. Located the South Rim in the heart of Grand Canyon Village this Hotel is a premier example of an upscale accommodation experience. Well located, top service and full lobby services including restaurant and bar, gift shop and places to relax the El Tovar is a flag ship for the Xanterra Hotel chain. Two things to be aware of, no elevator and poarking can be a long distance from the hotel entrance.

Room Tip: There are a number of suites one can explore including the Presidents and Zane Grey Syuite.
