Our third canyon stay and got lucky to secure the Mary Jane Coulter suite on the rim. If you can grab a view suite do it- it is special. Love the El Tovar, dining room remains really great - authentic atmosphere and really well prepared classic dishes.

Happy to not be roughing it at the El Tovar

Room Tip: Many do not care but I like a room with a view. Really quite after dark for stargazing an din the ea...

My husband and I were looking forward for our holiday in Grand Canyon. As we had stayed in the hotel for 3 days, we were disappointed with the maintenance. We stayed at room 6408. The staff members are exceptionally good but the condition of the room and the hallway needed to be improved. Bed size is not big enough for 2 persons. The air conditioning was so loud that we hardly could get some sleep. The green carpet needed to be replaced. The location is in the park but it is worth to stay in different hotels even though the location is outside the park.

We stayed here for 2 nights on our road trip out west and it was definitely worth it. It was only my boyfriend and I so we decided to get the smallest room to save money but that was a mistake. At first it was great but we soon figured out that we should have paid the extra $20 to get a king bed.
It was a very small room for how much we paid and we were running into each other a lot. But that is my biggest complaint. It was clean, the shower was nice, the views are fantastic, and the employees were very nice (considering we are a younger couple and don't always get treated with respect.)
The food at the hotel is mediocre but the breakfast food was so tasty! So definitely go in the morning.
This hotel is definitely the best place to stay on the south rim so I would suggest it!

Room Tip: Pay the extra $20 to get a bigger bed! It's worth it.

What really makes this place is the location, we had a rim side room so literally a stones through away from the edge! The food was lovely but again the view from the resturant is what made it so speacial. Without location the hotel was nothing specail but because for it would defanatley stay again!

We stayed two nights in mid-April and were very lucky to have obtained reservations since I booked only six weeks in advance. We had to move rooms from the first night to the second, but that is only because we booked so late. The front desk held on to our luggage and moved it to our second room while we were out for the day.

We stayed the first night in the Mary Colter Suite. It was very spacious and if money is not of great concern, then absolutely worth the additional charge. The bathroom was much more roomy and airy while the bathroom in the regular room was so cramped that it was almost impossible to turn around. If money is an issue, book a regular room as we spent very little time inside.

As others have commented, the furnishings are quite old, but as long as one goes in knowing that, everything is serviceable. It just isn't the level one would expect for the price charged, but you are paying for location. The second floor common area offers games and overlooks the lobby. The bar allows guests to take drinks out to the lobby or up to the second floor.

We completely lucked out with parking and then didn't move our car for two days. There is no need until it is time to depart.

It was amazing having the canyon right outside the door (or off the balcony from the Mary Colter suite). The location allowed one to pop out after dark to see the canyon's reflections.

While the service in El Tovar's dining room was wonderful, the food left a bit to be desired. It was fussy, but not well executed. We ate at Bright Angel the following night, recognizing that it offers a very different and more casual experience (burgers, sandwiches, etc)

We just left El Tovar and we had a wonderful experience. The hotel has character, it is cozy, and the rooms are small, simple but elegantly decorated. It is a historic hotel and its age shows in some areas of the carpet and furniture but I find that to be part of the charm! If you remember that this is a hunting lodge, not a Four Seasons or a Ritz you won't be disappointed. You will want to spend time overlooking the canyon, or hiking most of the time anyway and....... very little time in your room.

The lobby is great and we loved hanging out at the bar for a couple of drinks after a long hike. The views and artwork were spectacular.

This is the best hotel to stay while visiting the Grand Canyon, and the fact that it take months in advance to get a room should definitely be all you need to know about it.

It's hard to explain. There is something a little creepy about this place but it is probably the nicest place to stay. We had a large room w an area to walk outside that had a partial view of the Grand Canyon. The room was relatively clean, the AC was spotty in certain areas but overall I am happy we stayed here. Dinner in the dining room was good. It is an expensive place but what can you expect - the Grand Canyon is amazing!!!!
