“Quick walk to rim”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

Stayed in a standard room. Nothing special about the room. Its all about the location. From my room it was 30 steps to exit the hotel and another 30 steps to a great viewing location of the Grand Canyon. Great historic hotel and great location. Many neat points are within walking distance. Parking could be a problem. Rather small parking lot which is first come first serve. Hotel guests do not have guarenteed parking. We were able to find a spot and never moved the car.

Excellent, classic hotel. Opened in 1905, very historic. Right on the South Rim. Very nice lounge and restaurant. Staff is very guest oriented. Especially go out of their way for those with special needs. Great base for exploring while maintaining a touch of rustic charm and elegance.

Location and history are the biggest assets of the El Tovar Hotel. It was the first hotel to appear in the Grand Canyon nearly 110 years ago, and it virtually is located on the edge of the Grand Canyon. It only takes a few steps from the hotel to have the most spectacular view, and from the outside terrace of the bar you also have a great view. The bar itself is great as well.

The entrance lobby of the hotel breathes the past and is very impressing, and so is the restaurant which really serves good food. The service of the staff is excellent, with the exception of 1 guy who is supposed to show you the rooms. This person was the bad joker of the hotel as he was uninterested, and refused to carry any luggage, even though he saw that my wife and I were struggling with it. Wow, in the USA the lowest service level of a person we ever got. Lucky for him he was the only exception as the other staff members were excellent. May be the management should consider to exhibit him in the front hall next to the buffalo, moose and deer and express that he belongs to the rare species of hotel staff members not giving any service.

The room we stayed in was disappointing. We stayed in a 'de luxe room' on the ground floor, but after looking 5 seconds around, it was impossible to see what exactly was so 'the luxe' in this room. The interior was shabby, old and the lay-out of the room was even weird. There were 2 front doors, which indicated that this room might have been 2 rooms in the past, but the total size of the room did not exceed 20m2. Definitely the rooms need a renovation and upgrading.

Our trip to the Grand Canyon was wonderful. El Tovar adds to the value of our experience due to its location, atmosphere of the historic building, great restaurant and bar. They should be aware (and for sure they are) that rooms need an upgrade.

We booked the same day, so there was pretty limited availability. We stayed in room 6434 -- it was ok (we were just staying overnight so we wouldn't have to drive back to Scottsdale the same day). As others have said, you can't really have the curtains or window open as it over looks the porch of the lounge. The room is pretty small with only a double bed. There was a frig and coffee maker. The bed while small was comfortable.

The best part was the location. It is located right on the south rim of the Grand Canyon, so was able to get up in the morning, walk outside and enjoy the beautiful weather and great view. Took some beautiful pictures right outside the hotel.
If we were staying there for more than a night, I would definitely book a different room.

Overall it was worth it to not have to make the trip back to Scottsdale the same day. There is a lounge and restaurant on site as well as a gift shop. Parking can be an issue at certain times of day (i.e. sunset), but then tends to clear out.

Room Tip: avoid 6434 if you can, especially if you want to be able to open the window and enjoy the view.

Our trip consisted of my husband and his brother and sister-in-law. The original plan was for all four of us to hike down and stay at Phantom Ranch overnight and then hike out the next day. However, due to a knee issue, my sister-in-law was unable to make the trek down. Therefore, five days before our trip, I contacted Xanterra Resorts and canceled our spots in the women's dorm at Phantom Ranch and luckily found lodging in the park for us ladies, the night the guys would be staying at Phantom Ranch. Let me start by saying that EVERYONE I talked with at Xanterra Resorts and at Grand Canyon was extremely helpful and polite. Not once was I rushed to make a decision. Further, everyone we came into contact with at Grand Canyon and Xanterra (other than one male and female bus driver) seemed extremely happy with their job and were more than eager to assist in anyway possible.
We arrived at Phantom Ranch on Thursday afternoon around 2:00 p.m., August 7, 2014, after flying into Las Vegas and renting a car at the airport and making the drive to Grand Canyon (approx 5 hours). Our rooms were ready and we were quickly checked in and our bags quickly delivered to our rooms. We had already made dinner reservations for the El Tovar restaurant that night, so we were out to do some exploring of the canyon.
As this was our third visit there we were eager to show our brother and sister-in-law the beauty of what we had found in the canyon.
Our room was perfect - Very Clean, very rustic, The room was decent size and had a dorm size refrigerator which was perfect for getting the water good and chilled before the guys' hike down the canyon on the S. Keibab Trail.
The room was quiet, even though we were just above the gift shop. We spent very little time in our room as there was way too much to see and do to sit in the room. The tv got several channels and there was enough variety for anyone who would have wanted to watch tv. Free wi-fi. Keurig Coffee maker.
It is a National Park, so the price was a little more. However, for the ambiance and the views outside of the building, it was well worth every penney.
Looking forward to our next visit in a year or two!!!!

We had a great time at El Tovar. If you don't mind the crowds, the historic nature of the hotel is charming. We loved seeing the hotel that has been featured in so many movies, and was once a Fred Harvey location.

We stayed here for 3 nights and had a very comfortable stay although the location of our room (number 6434) was not great as, when the curtains were opened, it looked directly out onto the cocktail lounge's veranda.
The old worlde hunting lodge ambience was charming.
Other positives - coffee making facilities and fridge in room.
Negatives - our room location and size if bed (if you like a king or larger)
