“Great Stay at the Grand Canyon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2014

We stayed overnight at Kachina Lodge in April 2014, booked a partial canyon view room. They put us at ground floor close to Bright Angel restaurant, with full view to the canyon (don't think it was partial canyon view, whole window was facing the canyon, beautiful). The room was old and not too big, but very well maintained.

The main benefit of staying right at the canyon is that it was easy to watch sunset and sunrise, which are really beautiful and majestic. You just need to walk outside the room or took a short drive if you wish to watch from another point. The temperature really dropped after sunset and before sunrise though, bringing a blanket from the room helped :) and I saw some people did the same thing.

We also found out that the sky after dark was lit with thousands of twinkle stars, nothing i have ever seen before, amazing. The view of the canyon with twinkling stars was just out of this world.

The only complains were 1) limited parking lots, 2) limited number of restaurants (you may want to reserve for dinner if you do not want to wait for an hour).

Other than that, we had a great time at the Grand Canyon and good night sleep at Kachina Lodge.

Nothing fancy, but clean and comfy and right on the rim of the canyon. Easy walking distance to restaurants at Bright Angel Lodge and the El Tovar Hotel. The parking is the biggest complaint, initially had to park quite a distance away, moved the car the second morning after guests checked out. A great place to stay if you can't get in El Tovar or Bright Angel.

Stayed at the Kachina Lodge for one night during a short side trip to the Grand Canyon before returning home to NJ from a business trip to Phoenix. Since we wanted to see it all in a very short time we figured staying on the rim would give us the best chance of experiencing the Canyon. Agree with all the other reviews re: dormitory type room, rough towels, zero parking etc. but room was cozy and the coffee w/real condiments was great - partial view was ok but being outside is better. We had dinner at El Tovar right next door (made reservations weeks ahead) but had breakfast there as well with no reservations and no wait at 9AM. Thought the view outside the lodge was amazing until we were returning from dinner and saw the sky! Look up if you live in an urban area!! The sky had a million stars - looked like the planetarium in NYC - so exciting! Also was amazed at the wildlife roaming freely throughout the park. Drove back to Phoenix and stopped at all the points on interest along the Canyon. Views even better as you go along. All in all - a worthwhile and memorable trip.

Room Tip: Partial view on first floor is exactly that - second floor has view - didn't have a lot of noise...

We were pleasantly surprised that this addition was so new and up to date. You are right next to the canyon plus an easy walk to several choices for meals. It is also an easy walk to the shuttle stop for the red and blue routes. The rooms have frig, microwave and keurig coffee makers. The only challenge was parking. Difficult to find a spot when checking in at the El Tovar plus even more difficult at the lodge so be prepared.

When staying at the Grand Canyon, there are essentially three choices:

1) Staying at one of the rim lodges (El Tovar, Kachina, Thunderbird, Bright Angel)
2) Staying off the rim (e.g. Yavapai)
3) Staying outside the park

We decided to splurge and got a partial view room at the Kachina. Some thoughts from our 2 night stay:

- Because no DST in Arizona, sun rises an hour earlier than "normal". The windows shades work pretty well but the bright sunlight cracks through -- especially at the rim. So be prepared to rise early if you wake up when it is light.

- Parking is a pain. Lot is small and not restricted to guests - so I had to lurk in the Kachina Lodge parking lot for 10 minutes before I lucked out and someone left. Definitely one of the minuses to staying at the rim and checking in during the busy period around sunset.

- Partial view rooms on the ground floor is meh. People walk past all the time and so there's very little privacy and if you sit down, you can't see the view. Only way to see the view is to stand by the window. But the view was good. The rim literally only about 50 feet away from the window. The alternative is a view overlooking the parking lot.

- Convenience is the key when staying at the rim. Especially if you're taking an early morning shuttle (5am in the summer) to go hiking. The hiker shuttle stops a few minutes down between the Thunderbird and Bright Angel lodge. Or if you like to catch sunrise at the rim, it's just a matter of getting out of bed and walking 20 seconds to the rim.

- The Keurig coffee machine is a big plus.

- Although rooms were like dorm rooms -- service was good. We had some maintenance needed in the bathrooms and an engineer came up within 15 minutes and fixed the problem quickly.

- Windows slide open. For those who like fresh air.

- Call ahead and book dinner at El Tovar BEFORE you arrive - if you want to eat there. If you wait till you arrive, chances are that they are booked solid for dinner.

- Bright Angel Lodge and El Tovar have nice lobbies. Nothing nice about the Kachina public areas to speak of.

- TV and phones in the room. Though the TV was not the new fangled big screen one. Free wifi.

- We had to check in at the El Tovar. Pulled up to the driveway to check in, then drive one block down to look for parking at the Kachina Lodge.

All in all, a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Book ahead as reservations fill up fast. Book El Tovar dinner before you arrive if you want to eat t...

The Kachina's rooms are basic, yet clean and comfortable. The walls are painted cinderblock, and reminded me of the dorm rooms in college. The bathroom was updated nicely and was clean. Nice that soap, shampoo, etc. is in a dispenser in the shower. We used the mini fridge and coffee maker, which were fine. The beds were basic, pillows were flat and uncomfortable. I would recommend staying in one of the top lodges, but this is fine if you prefer to save money or the others are booked.

We stayed at the Kachina lodge for several days in March. The location was ideal for a first time trip to the Grand Canyon. It was close to the in-park shuttle system. We purchased food in Flagstaff and used the in-room fridge for our lunch supplies and snacks. A microwave would have been nice. The room was comfortable and the location was so convenient as a home base for daily hikes, etc.

Room Tip: This particular lodge has limited canyon view rooms but honestly, who stays in the room? Within 10 s...
