“Nostalgic lodging in the park”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2013

These older lodge type buildings remind me of our family trips in the 1970's. The buildings are clearly older now, but have been more or less kept up over this time. We were assigned an upstairs room on the end of a block (as we requested a quiet room), and this was both quiet and comfortable. The room itself was a little dated (old TV, heaters, fans, and WC) but it was all clean in fine working condition, and we have no complaints at all.
The overall "campus" (yes it is quite a large complex) is well kept, tidy, and very well managed. The reception staff were very efficient and welcoming, and answered our questions easily. The food services are all cafeteria style, but the food itself was quite acceptable, and there are upper-class options elsewhere in the village if you want. The management of the campus have a very strong eco-friendly set of policies for the lodges and that is very much appreciated for a national park. All of the park buildings and facilities somehow remind me of my childhood when our family would go on car-trips... the atmosphere has not changed very much, and that is somehow a very welcome relief.
The real advantage to staying at Maswik (as opposed to outside of the park) is that it is the best value with close proximity to the Canyon itself. It is a good 10min walk from the hotel to the rim, but there are free shuttle busses everywhere in the village that run well into the evening.
Although the cost of staying in the village is much higher than outside of the park (there are no deals to be had here!) ...we were very satisfied with our stay at Maswik Lodge, and would certainly recommend it to anyone seeking the "value" place to stay on the South Rim.

Room Tip: Quiet rooms are found on the upper floors and can be requested at the time of reservation. Families...

Thank you for your comments on our Maswik Lodge. These are the newest in-park lodges, built in the mid-1980s. We work to maintain all of our properties in clean comfortable condition, and feel they they must compliment the Grand Canyon experience. It is especially gratifying to read that the efforts of our staff, and our environmental commitment do not go unnoticed. We stress the importance of quality customer service, and how
important each empoyee is to the overall guest experience. Their interaction with guests often makes a great trip even better. This dates back to the Fred Harvey history, which we are proud of. Thank you for sharing your experience.

The various lodging facilities at the Maswik are spread out over an extended area. The rooms are clean and well equipped. The internet is not dependable but when you are around the Grand Canyon - who needs it?. The room we were in had a separate sink and shower area which is always appreciated. The dining options are food court style and if not Michelin rated quite acceptable. Other properties within walking distance have provide more upscale dining and the Maswik front desk will provide a comprehensive list of these options. Bring a flashlight for walking around the village at night.

We took up three side by side rooms on the Willow building. We visited when the nights had turned cold and the lack of insulation required us to run the heater all night to keep our room warm enough to sleep. This is more "lodgy" than hotel fare but what should you expect inside the park and its way above camping. Facility was within walking distance of the Canyon Rim and right on the shuttle route. There was a food court and a pizza pub for food with average to above average fare. We enjoyed our stay and would stay again the next time we visit. If you are looking for 4* accommodations this is not the place for you.

Room Tip: Get an upstairs room if you can. Less noisy than the first floor.

What a terrific place to stay in the Canyon. We were shut out of the El Tovar and the Bright Angel because of our spontaneous plans but it worked out perfectly for us. We just spent two nights at the Maswik Lodge in the Grand Canyon. It is not right on the rim or overlooking it, but a very quick 5 minute walk to the rim. We were in rooms 6764 and 6765. I can't speak for all the accommodations at the Maswik, but these rooms were perfect. They were connected as one floor but detached from a main building. They had a front entry door and large sliders out the back onto a small patio and grass. This was a nice surprise as we were able to sit out there and have a snack and a drink as if it were a back yard. Room was a basic 2 bed room. There was a fridge and a coffeepot complete with coffee, tea and sugar. It was very clean with new carpets. The cafeteria was OK. They had a decent selection but pretty much a cafeteria food. Burgers, salads (at the Mexican station the build your own salad was good), chicken, deli sandwiches etc. If you want a "nice" restaurant nearby try the El Tovar or Bright Angel. I would certainly recommend this hotel as it was less expensive than the El Tovar and Bright Angel but was pretty much as close to the rim as you could get without being ON it. Save your money, stay here and go out to a nice dinner with the money you have saved. AND of course the Grand Canyon is beyond magnificent. Enjoy.

Room Tip: Just check to see if you can have one of the more newly renovated rooms.

This lodge was part of our Railway package. If I had been given the opportunity to upgrade I certainly would have. The room was quite far from the main lodge and it was outdated and dark. The noise was ridiculous from the people upstairs and the ice machine in front of our room. My biggest complaint was the bed, it was HORRIBLE! Sloped, uncomfortable, gross bedding, hard pillows, needless to say we did not get a good night's sleep. The only positive thing I have to say was the room backed up to the trees with no building behind us, so the view was nice and it was not a bad walk to the rim. I would NEVER return to this particular lodge, we will stay at El Tovar, the extra money would be totally worth it.

The location is fantastic- in the park very close to the rim. Our room was average, basic and could have been cleaner but it did the job. The room was outdated and a little dark too. The location was the best thing about staying here. It's lovely to be able to enjoy sunset and sunrise in the park and to have time to wander around.

This lodge was part of our Grand Canyon Railway package. Had the description been more accurate, I would have paid extra to stay at El Tovar. The Maswik is very rustic, outdated and rooms are located in various out buildings scattered throughout the property. It was quite a walk from the main "lobby" to the lodge our room was in. I would not recommend this location for elderly guests. The staff was rude and dining options are very limited.
I did notify the company via email about my concerns and received a prompt response and sincere apology.

Room Tip: If you must stay here , ask got a room closest to the main building where the lobby and cafeteria ar...
