It was so gorgeous first thing in the morning. It was actually cold. We saw two sets of bear on our way up to here.We had the most gorgeous view of Gods Country, The mountains had fog on the tops . An experience I will never forget.

We had one day to visit the park and this was the first thing on our list. The parking lot was crowded but we lucked out and found a place to park on our first pass through. The gift shop was nice, the staff there even nicer. You can take pictures from the parking lot, but you really should do the almost one mile hike up to the observation tower. The surface is even and well maintained. The grade is fairly steep (at least it was to this flat lander!) but manageable, even for a senior citizen. We took breaks as we needed and made our way to the top. Lots of friendly folks to chat with along the way. We asked folks to take a few pictures of us and they gladly obliged. Bring a jacket, even in the summer. The day we went was cloudy and cool, with spotty rain. Our weather-proof jackets were certainly welcomed.

This is not to be missed Smoky Sojourners! The Dome is the top most point in the Smokies, and its view is legendary. The walk up to the dome itself is steep, though paved and easy. There is a connecting point to the AT along the way. Coming down the peak we were wrapped in a cooling mist, and distancing ourselves from the other hikers, we found the experience truly magical...setting sun, mist, nature sounds...the lasting impact of such a moment cannot be oversold. We returned the next night, just to enjoy shooting sunset pictures. Words can't really capture such an experience, and we are so very grateful for such a page in the book of our Smokies Adventure. A few notes: the drive up and down, especially at night requires a sense of attention and detail to your driving, especially if it is dark and raining. Take your time! If someone behind you wants to rush, and you might not be used to mountain driving, use one of the many pull offs to let them get ahead. Keep your lights on, honk the horn as you go into tunnels, and be safe out there. It took me a few trips to understand such things, so hopefully this will help others. Enjoy Clingman's Dome!

We drove there during a stay near the park. It's about 40 minutes to drive from Cherokee. As we approached Clingmans Dome, the road got crowded and the parking lot was packed. We got the last parking spot. We walked around the lot, looking at the views. The trail to the top is half a mile, going up 330 feet, so our bad knees told us to pass on the climb. It was still a worthwhile trip.

Very nice view! Got some great pictures. Takes forever to get to a parking spot as everyone is driving slowly trying to wait for someone else to leave. This backs traffic up for miles. Horrible bathrooms (?).....if that's what you call them. Not much more than a portolet. Smelly and floors nasty and no running water to wash hands. Take your own sanitizer and sone Lysol. Did I mention the view is lovely?!
