I LOVE going to Cades cove, we don't usually see much but this time we did! We say 3-4 bears, about 10 deer, and a Coyote. It can be a bit frustrating driving through though. There were a lot of rangers out this time telling people to keep moving. We encountered one that was rude, but the women we spoke with (looking for directions) was very sweet. The one we saw that was rude was enforcing parking/traffic. We went to pull off and take a picture real quick. We were about 80% out of the road but he told us to move. Right behind him was a SUV that was about 90% IN the road and we barely got passed them. I wish they had more signs for places down there. My husband had some family (5th great grandparents) they had a home there and are buried and it took a us a bit to find where. The female ranger gave us an idea of where it was but there was no sign for the cemetery, we just happened to noticed a path so we followed!

Beautiful place to see scenery and wildlife. Pack your patience. The loop can take 2 or more ours to get through the whole loop this time of year. However we did see baby bears. We also hiked the laurel falls trail. Worth the visit. Several old churches houses and buildings to see. Very educational for everyone.

This is a neat place to visit- make sure you pick up the guide book for $1 at the beginning so can read about the historic buildings you will be seeing.
Also, be sure to block out several hours for your visit! We did not allow nearly enough time so we didn’t enjoy it as much as if we had just blocked off most of a day. We DID see 4 bears (3 separate sightings), which still made it worth the trip!
Please please please- if there is something you want to see along the way, PULL OVER. Don’t just stop in the middle of the road so you can take a picture. It might not seem like a big deal, but when there are 20 cars behind you, it backs everything up. Pull over and enjoy!

We visited Gatlinburg for a four night vacation with the full intention of checking out as much of the National park that time would allow, but Cades Cove was top of our list, as it turns out, rightfully so.
Even the drive to the Cove was enjoyable, stopping every so often to take in the scenery.
At the start of the "loop" things start to slow down, it wasn't too congested when we were there but traffic, (speed limit), is slow, the upside to this is you are driving slow enough to take in the scenery and views, and the views are what it is all about. There are several places to stop along the way to soak up the views or investigate the old buildings, the Churches with their grave yards were interesting. At the "Missionary Baptist Church" traffic had come to a halt due to a mother bear and her cub being spotted in a nearby field. I had already parked up to look at the Church when I saw a small crowd gathering, so I wandered across and managed to get a few photos of the Bears. on returning to the car I was confronted with a six foot snake between my car and the pick-up next to it, you don't get that in the UK.
The Cades Cove/Cable Mill Visitor Centre is a good place to stop, there is a good variety of options for souvenirs, maps, books and other mementos of your visit, there are also clean toilets, (when I was there), should you need them.
The loop road has a multitude of places to stop and check out a variety of historical buildings where many of the people resting in the grave yards once worked and lived, (many from the 1800's), definitely worth the time to stop and explore, your imagination does the rest.
On the return journey to Gatlinburg, just outside of Cades Cove, I saw a park rangers car stopped, next to it were a couple of people, and the park ranger, looking up into the woods. There was a mother bear with three young cubs about 50 yards away, I was lucky enough to get some more photos.
The scenery on the whole journey, (driving to, from and when you are there), is, without doubt, stunning, and well worth the visit.
If you are in the area, you will notice that the whole of the Smoky Mountain National Park offers breath taking views and scenery, Cades cove is a relatively compact area that not only offers this scenery but an abundance of nature/wildlife for you to enjoy.
