We stopped in on the way back from Punaluu (Black Sand Beach) in the early afternoon and there was enough to keep us busy until "glow time" at 7:30 pm. We started at the visitors center and asked a ranger for her recommendations on "must-dos". She recommended Crater Rim Road, stopping at the Lava tubes and driving to the ocean to see the arch and the end of the road covered in lava. We were amazed at how massive the lava flows were and loved all the views from the many areas to pull over. We had a quick lunch in the lodge (I'd suggest packing a picnic lunch if you can - it's pricy for what you get!), checked out the gift shops, stopped at the steam vents, then drove to the Jagger Museum to find a spot for seeing the glow. We could have spent longer here and would have loved to do a hike, but you can really see a lot of the park in just 6 hours!

This was arranged through the hotel as a small group tour, ending up with the view at twilight. Unfortunately I just bought a new camera and didn't have time to work it out before the day, so my night photos did not turn out! Nevertheless it was spectacular and our guide Taj, was very informative and educational. He even took us into a Lava Tube for interest.
I recommend that you are dressed for any condition, it was wet at times, cold in the higher altitudes and especially at night have an extra layer. Good shoes are a must as lava is quite unforgiving if you fall over. It cuts the skin like broken glass. In the evenings it is extremely dark as there are no artificial lighting for miles around.

If you can tear yourself away from the beach and over the top resorts, take in this natural wonder. The sight of the crater from the rim next to a most educational museum/exhibition is one you'll never forget. Take the whole family, the kids will be fascinated. Consider staying past 7pm and see the visible lava flow "red glow" that lights the distant night sky. WOW!
We ate dinner at the park restaurant just before sunset. The menu choices and food are excellent. We had a wonderful waiter. Snag a table by the picture window, the views of the crater are breathtaking.

Pretty easy to find, VNP was worth the trip. The visitor center and the Jaggar museum were interesting. We went on a hike with a ranger and learned much about the invasive species on the island. We mainly drove Crater Rim road. We were not able to be there at night, so we did not get to see the glow, but there was a good dose of steam coming out of the volcano. We also stopped at the steam vents and the lava tube. We really enjoyed the lava tube. I wish we had more time. We would have liked to have done the four mile hike around the rim and down into the caldera. Just a reason to go back.

We also went to the lodge which has a great view of the volcano. Great chairs on the deck there for sitting an taking it all in. There is also a restaurant there - the only one in the park. We packed a lunch and found plenty of picnic tables near the visitor center which was helpful.

This was our second trip to the park because we had to see Thurston Lava Tube, which we missed the first time. Although it wasn't the best place I've ever visited I was glad we made the return trip. It made us think of how many years ago this was formed and that at one time lava was flowing through this area.
