Forest ranger talks are all exceptional and if you are a non-hiker and want to have a short hike, go on a guided walk.

“Plan to spend an entire day...it's worth it!”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

We arrived at the visitor center around noon. We first proceeded to drive down to the ocean to see the Holei Sea Arch. On the way there, it was nice to see the change in vegetations from rain forest to barren earth with lava rocks all around you. The sea arch as well as the entire coastline are quite impressive to see. There are bathroom facilities as well as a booth at the end of the road that sells snacks and memorabilia. We then drove back up and parked at the Lava Tube. There, we began our counter clock-wise hike around the crater rim. We took everyone's advice and got on the Hilauea Iki trail, which is beginner to intermediate level. We did not purchase the $2 brochure like most people did, simply because we did not have any dollar bills on us (an oversight on our part). We did, however, stop at the Volcano House for a light lunch, about a mile into the hike. The view at the restaurant was simply breathtaking. After our light meal, we continued our hike on the Kilauea Iki trail and descended down to the crater. It was raining off and on, and the trail was a bit muddy and slippery, but it didn't really bother us. The plants and fowls along the way kept us intrigued. When we finally got down to the crater, we spent some time taking in the scenery there. The feeling standing at the bottom of the crater with fresh lava rocks and steam coming out of the earth can only be described as surreal. The ascend back up to the Lava Tube did not take long at all. Overall, we spent 6 hours at the park, and we highly recommend it.

“A great way to spend the afternoon!”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

We stopped in on the way back from Punaluu (Black Sand Beach) in the early afternoon and there was enough to keep us busy until "glow time" at 7:30 pm. We started at the visitors center and asked a ranger for her recommendations on "must-dos". She recommended Crater Rim Road, stopping at the Lava tubes and driving to the ocean to see the arch and the end of the road covered in lava. We were amazed at how massive the lava flows were and loved all the views from the many areas to pull over. We had a quick lunch in the lodge (I'd suggest packing a picnic lunch if you can - it's pricy for what you get!), checked out the gift shops, stopped at the steam vents, then drove to the Jagger Museum to find a spot for seeing the glow. We could have spent longer here and would have loved to do a hike, but you can really see a lot of the park in just 6 hours!

“Spectacular”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

This was arranged through the hotel as a small group tour, ending up with the view at twilight. Unfortunately I just bought a new camera and didn't have time to work it out before the day, so my night photos did not turn out! Nevertheless it was spectacular and our guide Taj, was very informative and educational. He even took us into a Lava Tube for interest.
I recommend that you are dressed for any condition, it was wet at times, cold in the higher altitudes and especially at night have an extra layer. Good shoes are a must as lava is quite unforgiving if you fall over. It cuts the skin like broken glass. In the evenings it is extremely dark as there are no artificial lighting for miles around.

“A Real Live Volcano”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

If you can tear yourself away from the beach and over the top resorts, take in this natural wonder. The sight of the crater from the rim next to a most educational museum/exhibition is one you'll never forget. Take the whole family, the kids will be fascinated. Consider staying past 7pm and see the visible lava flow "red glow" that lights the distant night sky. WOW!
We ate dinner at the park restaurant just before sunset. The menu choices and food are excellent. We had a wonderful waiter. Snag a table by the picture window, the views of the crater are breathtaking.
