I will write separate reviews of the different activities we did in the park, but overall this is an attraction that should not be missed. We drove down Chain of Craters Road, hiked Kilauea Iki, walked through the Thurston Lava Tube, and watched the steam vents and lava glow at Kilauea. The rangers at the visitor center and Jagger museum are very helpful and can give you some great pointers on how to maximize your time in the park. We spent one day there and got to see everything we wanted to see. If you're on the Big Island, make sure to add this to your itinerary!

How neat was it to be near a volcano with steam vents and all. The crater was gianormus, never thought I'd experience something like this. Make sure you bring a light jacket or sweater very chilly and windy. In the middle of the field two red flowers stood out great photo. Make sure you take your cameras! Trails to hike, walk or bike. Enjoyable for alll ages....don't miss it!

We stayed there two nights so we could visit the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Too bad there's no driving-in camping inside the park.

There is a nice and big grassy area where you can pitch your tent. The bathrooms are nice and there's a big sink to clean the dishes. However there's no showers.

I wasn't cold at all during my stay there. I slept well and like it a lot.

Just across the road, there is a trail that leads to the Jagar Museum, from where you can see the crater. We did it late in the evening so we could see the glow of the lava in the crater and it was really nice!

You will hear a lot about Kilauea crater, but even so, it fullfills all expectations. The drive from the Visitor Center to Jaggar Museum takes about 10 minutes or less, and then, at Jaggar Museum, you are next to the smoking crater. It is truly a sight to see! We also joined a guided tour which lasted about 1 hour from the visitor center to another view point of the crater which is not marked and it was incredible.I strongly recommend to join one of the ranger led walks, because they also explain the history and legends of the volcano and point out at tress and geological stuff. We also went to view the Kilauea crater at night and the red glow was amazing , larger and redder and more visible than expected. It gets quite cold when the sun sets, so wear long trousers and jackets,

On July 20, 2013, we went on a tour by Hawaii Forest & Trail with Mike as the guide. Mike was a very informative tour guide and we learned lots about the history/culture of the Big Island. The lunch and picnic dinner were great and included in the cost of the tour. We also had 8 other tourists in the comfortable van that made for great conversation and company. I'd highly advise booking a tour with this group. We're looking forward to our next visit and will definitely book a tour with Hawaii Forest & Trail. Thanks Mike!
