Kilauea Volcano Military Camp
Reviewed 27 September 2010

Stayed one night at KMC in a one bedroom. The rooms were clean and really cozy. I was suprised at how cold it got overnight in September!! Walked to the Crater's edge and drove down to Jaeger Museum. Both a must. Do Not let them sell you into a Volcano Tour. The lady that sold me on it said I would see the lava!! Nope...the tour takes you to about 1 mile from the waters edge where you can see (in a far distance) the steam rising from the waters edge where the lava meets the water!!!! I would stay at the camp again..but..not take the tours..they are very dissapointing.

We stayed 3 nights in a one bedroom cottage with jetted tub. These are the newly renovated cottages and it was extremly cozy for the 2 of us. It had a fireplace and couch in the living room. The beds were comfortable.
The facility had an evening bingo program in the cafeteria which was fun. We signed up for the Hilo tour which was well worth doing and a good value.
The food in the cafeteria was good but it was cafeteria food.
The staff at the front desk were great. The location in Volcano National Park made it very convenient for exploreing the past lava flows and surrounding area. Will definitely come back.

This is the second time we have come to Hawaii and the second time we have stayed here. The service has only gotten better. Staying in the Volcano National Park is a great expieriance and really maximizes your trip expieriance. The staff is friendly and very attentive to any needs or questions you have. The tours cant be beat for the price either. We took the Hilo tour with Kieth as our guide. He was friendly and very knowledgable about all facets of the island and Hawaii in general as he grew up here and put a personal touch on the trip. Same great amenities are still here. Breakfast is good but we spent most of our time in town or dining out in the evening but the Crater Rim Cafe on camp serves good food. I would recommend this to everyone who is able to stay here.

Very quiet location within Volcano National Park. Bungalows very affordable and well kept. Many amenities such as bowling and tennis and basketball courts on site as well as a convenience store. Parking right in front of your bungalow.

Arrived Monday afternoon. Cozy cabin a step up from camping. Circle Island tour on Tuesday was long but enjoyable. Wednesday tour of Hilo was nice, but be prepared for tourist traps stops at Big Island Candies, Orchid Garden, etc. Nice waterfalls. Thursday toured volcano national park which was my favorite tour. Lava tube and seeing coastline was highlight. Flew out that afternoon after tour. We did not get a rental car since we did the tours; however, this limited us to eat at the KMC cafe, Lava lounge, or Bowling alley. Or hike about 0.6 miles to Volcano House for nice but expensive meal with great view of caldera.

Be sure to pack bottled water, light sweaters or jackets for evenings, your own flashlight (ones provided are just ok), and snacks.

We plan on returning for longer stay with a rental car. I feel that staying in Hilo for a few days, in Kailua-Kona for a few days, and at KMC for a few days may be the way to go to see all the islands highlights on your own. I would also like to take a trip up to the summit of Mauna Kea for stargazing, see the lava flow at night by boat, and do the night time manta ray viewing.

Well Kept Secret. KMC is is a military resort that allows the general public to use some of the facilities. The cabins (ranging from one room to three and four rooms with kitchens, fireplaces and jetted tubs) are reserved for military/DOD (see the site's restrictions). My wife and I had a cabin with a living room, fireplace, full kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, one with a jetted tub).
What they don't say is that if you are visiting the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park you can fill your car with discounted gas (open 24 hours a day), the theater, use the camp's cafe' and have $8 sirloin steaks and even use the laundromats. The atmosphere at the cafe is not high end but the people are friendly and the food is ample.

I traveled here with my mom and my aunt in Sept. We weren't expecting a lot, just a cabin up in the mountains...but, these are so much more. We stayed for two nights in a two bedroom/two bath cabin for $120.00 per night. There was a queen bed in the "master" bedroom and two queen beds in the other bedroom, a small kitchen area (w/microwave, sink and refrigerator) and large living room area with fireplace.
The cabin smelled like firewood and we did have some ants, but HEY, its a campground. The beds were very comfortable and the tiffany style lights in the rooms were such a cute touch.
We ate breakfast at the cafeteria the next morning and it was a bargain! Big breakfast for $5.50 (we couldn't finish it!). We also took the Volcano Crater Rim Tour ($30.00 per person) with Kaipo and it was wonderful. Kaipo was very knowledgable and sooo nice...we all wanted to give him a hug afterwards! You can really tell how much Hawaiians love their culture and how proud they are of their history.
After our tour, my mom, aunt and I headed over to the Volcano Winery (about 2 miles away) and did some winetasting. For dinner, we went to the Volcano House (about 1/2 mile away) and had probably the best prime rib dinner ever, while overlooking the caldera. We only got one whole day to experience the Volcano and if I ever do go back, I would definately plan to stay longer!
