“Unique and interesting place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

This is an older lodge that has been very nicely updated with attractive room decor, comfortable bed and small but well-appointed bathroom. A crater-view room is well worth the extra $$…the volcano is your night-light! The restaurant is also to be commended for offering a variety of dishes featuring locally-sourced ingredients, creatively prepared…and a fine view of the caldera…as the sun sets, the volcano's glow appears in the distance. Staff were all professional and very friendly to us. Terrific breakfast buffet included an omelet station and plentiful tropical fruits. Guests are provided free wi-fi. Wish we'd had more time to try out riding the bikes around. Worth the expense as it's really a unique experience to stay.

Room Tip: Go for a crater-view room

Aloha nanm00,

Thank you for sharing your experiences from Volcano House, located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I'm glad that you enjoyed our restaurants and appreciated the locally sourced ingredients. It always amazes me how much we source from right here on the Big Island. Our produce comes from Johnson Farms where they have 5 acres of organic produce growing year round just for our restaurant. We also source all of our seafood and much of our meats from the Island and of course our coffee, chocolate and vanilla all come from nearby farms.

Thank you again for the wonderful feedback and I wish you safe travels!

We stayed at Volcano House for just one night, but wish we had stayed longer! This was our first trip to Hawaii and the views of the crater (and the whole park visit) were surreal. We actually loved the lodge and our room, and did not find it small at all. It is perfect for what it is...a hotel meant to offer you the convenience of staying right in the park and the beauty of the view of the volcano. If you are looking for a luxury resort experience, then look elsewhere. The room was a nice size, the bed was comfortable, and it had all the standard amenities. The cookies on the pillow was a nice touch! We stayed in Room 26, which did not have a view of the caldera, but it was still very nice. In our opinion, we were not there to spend time hanging out in the room anyway. There is a cute sitting area in front of the windows overlooking the caldera, and a fireplace in the lobby. The gift shops were amazing - many items made by Hawaiian artists, not just your typical knick knack items.

We ate both dinner and breakfast at the restaurant and enjoyed both. For $15/person, the breakfast was actually quite a reasonable price given the limited options around the area and the prices we saw at various hotels for breakfast buffets. We enjoyed the dinner as well and thought the food was very good - of course the best part though was the night view!

Overall, we loved Volcano House and its convenience. Staying there really added to our first experience of HVNP. Although we stayed there in the first couple days of our 2 week, 3 island trip, it wound up being by far one of the highlights of the entire 2 weeks! We can't wait to return to HVNP, and will definitely stay at Volcano House again when we do!

Aloha Rayaly,

It's always good to hear positive feedback on a trip to Volcano House, and yours is no exception. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on TripAdvisor.

I'm happy that you shared with others that we're a historic lodge located in a National Park and that's the experience we provide our guests. I'm also pleased that you enjoyed our turndown cookies - they're made right here on the Big Island at Big island Delights.

I hope your summer in Brooklyn is going well and I would recommend that you visit our other properties located closer to your home in Gateway National Recreation and at Acadia National Park.

Thank you, again!

We booked (2) double bed rooms that were connecting with crater view in December 2013 for two nights. I called and confirmed the two double bed rooms in February and May 2014, they couldn't confirm connecting but assured me they had our (2) double bed rooms. When we checked in yesterday 6/11/14 they had only one double bed room and one king bed room. Of course they put us in two different buildings as well. We had Room 15 and 33 if you enjoy listening to the bar music, kids screaming and everyone going pass your room at the top of the stairs until midnight and then get the 5am crowd leaving you'll love this hotel. We checked out early and went back to the Fairmont for a good relaxing vacation night. We did eat dinner at the hotel and it was good, but the fans they have in the rooms aren't ceiling fans they have desktop NOISY fans, I guess to drown out the other noise. Visit the park, but do not stay. Of course the front desk didn't offer a credit for the night we checked out early. The park is wonderful, the Volcano House is not! Way to expensive for a tiny cramped room. Remember it's also the rainy side of the island, so you might not see the crater at night at all due to the clouds. We saw it for 10 minutes before the rain and clouds came back.

Room Tip: Food was good, $200 for four...l

Aloha Dan O,

Thank you for the feedback on your stay here Volcano House, located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed our views and our restaurant. However, it sounds like we let you down on your rooms and I truly apologize for this.

I took some time to really look into this issue today. Based on the notes of the reservation, on 12/22/13 we did inform you that only one of your rooms was a 2 bed room and that you understood, but if we could accommodate a change that we would make it. We should have done a better job communicating this to you in writing. I'm reviewing how we can include in our confirmation letter how many beds per room of each reservation. That way we all have the same expectations upon guest arrival.

I talked to the front desk agent that checked you out early. She indicated that she offered to provide you with connecting rooms the next day, but that you were ready to move on. We understood that we let you down and our Front Desk Manager then offered to buy your family breakfast to help make up for some of this.

Also, upon reviewing your checkout, we didn't charge for the second night lodging. That is always the case for early checkouts. I'm sorry if we led you to believe otherwise.

I'm also sorry you found our rooms small. Most of our TripAdvisor reviews mention that we are indeed cozy. We are very upfront with this, even indicating on our website the square footage of each room. As a historic lodge located in a national park, we sell rooms that were the norm in the 1940's and 1950's. The lodge itself is also very cozy and with only 33 rooms, no one room is terribly far from another.

It does rain here in Volcano - we are located in a rain forest and the moisture provides with the spectacular flora that Hawaii Volcano National Park has to offer. While this often plays second fiddle to the Volcano (thus the name of the park) many guests love the diversity the rain brings us.

I'd like to visit with you about this more, so please reach out to my using my contact info found below.

This hotel was very clean and the view was amazing. We have stayed in many Nat Park hotels and this one was the best. With it being recently remodeled, it was clean and well kept. We were surprised how large our room was. We didn't have a crater view room, but that was ok since we only use the room to sleep. We ate at both the restaurant and lounge and the food was fine. We had a great experience at this hotel. For those who have complained that the bathroom was small or that it wasn't like a 5star hotel, get real. This is a Nat park hotel. If you want a 5 star hotel, you won't find it in Volcano, go to Waikaloa.

We stayed here for one night while exploring Volcano National Park. The hotel atmosphere is laid-back and cozy, yet upscale. The views are unparalleled, and the rooms are well appointed with robes, slippers, and toiletries. There is both a bar and restaurant in the hotel, which are great. The only thing to keep in mind is that the hotel restaurant is pretty much the only dining option, and while the food is delicious, it is somewhat expensive (especially for the somewhat limited breakfast buffet). Overall, we had a wonderful experience staying at this hotel, and your trip to the volcanoes will be one to remember if you choose to stay here!

We had an amazing stay at the lodge. From the minute we pulled up to our departure the staff was friendly and attentive.
Room was clean and cozy. We had several meals and checked out the bar, amazing! The free bicycles they provided where a great way to see some of the nearby park sights. All in all we highly recommend the lodge and restaurant.
