It does take some time to get up to the mountain. Sometimes tourists to Seattle think it is closer than it is as it looks so close and magnificent. Absolute best time to visit is in summer to see the incredible wildflowers.
Be sure and bring a picnic.
If you are 62 or older, get a lifetime pass to ALL the national parks from the National Park website. VERY inexpensive and allows you and all the people in the car to enter for free.
Leave your animals at home, dogs are not allowed in most areas of the park.
Easy to visit for everyone, those more physically fit can take trail hikes, but those less so can easily still enjoy a visit
