“Fantastic Adventure”
Reviewed 8 February 2014

Been there 6 times over 20 yrs or so at 5 nights each time. did lots of hiking and was with a hiking group. the first 3 times stayed in a tent cabin with only a oil lantern. had to go to the ranch house for potty breaks and showers which is behind the kitchen and dining hall with sawdust on the floor.
later staid in wood cabin with shower and toilet very nice. your out in the wilderness with deer and bears so don't complain that your not in a best western hotel. i loved every minute of it. the food in the mess hall was great home cooking. eight different pies for desert made everyday fresh from the bakery a few miles down the road. eggs every morning the way you like them and pan cakes. lots of coffee and hot chocolate. heated on the fireplace in the mess hall. get up early and go to the mess hall for coffee and lookout at the huge pasture with horses and all by yourself usually. quiet and peaceful. you can rent a bike which i did and went to the bakery and to the town of Stehekin and back to the ranch. went to rainbow falls and the old apple orchard and the old log school house. went up to high bridge and hiked around coon lake and up on mt. McGreger a mile or so. the owners were super nice the Courtneys i believe. you can eat lunch at the bakery with ice cream and donuts or at the ranch. lots of people from the town come up for supper every night at the ranch but the ranch guests always got served first. when i was there there was no tv's or computers. the pacific crest trail goes by coon lake i believe so talked with a few who take the bus down to the bakery to load up on donuts and ice cream. or shower in town. all in all a fantastic stay at the ranch. different hike everyday if you want. canoe on the lake or ride a horse. even saw spawning salmon in the stehekin river which are locked in by the Lake at Chalan. you can go fishing i believe. remember your in the wilderness so don't whine cause your bathroom is to small or you stayed in a tent cabin w/o bathroom Enyoy

My wife and I stayed at Stehekin Valley Ranch in July, 2013 in a cabin with bath. The cabin was very roomy with a queen bed, sofa, table and chairs. It was comfortable but you should think "ranch". Don't expect a Best Western or Holiday Inn suite and you'll be fine. The bathroom is small but adequate and the lighting at night is dim at best. If you plan to do some reading in your room at night bring along a headlamp. Again, the operative word is "ranch". The cost included all meals and if you're out and about during the day as most are, you can pack yourself a sack lunch after you finish your breakfast. All the fixings are provided but you have to put it together yourself. The food was good and there was never a lack of it. The coffee is cowboy style so be prepared to strain the grounds through your teeth. There are lots of activities with extra cost options like horseback riding and kayaking. The bicycles are free on a first come, first serve basis. The hiking is very good with trails for all levels of fitness. You can choose from the moderate 4.4-mile (one-way) Rainbow Loop Trail with an elevation gain/loss of 1,000 feet or the exhausting 15.4-mile (roundtrip) Mt. McGregor Trail with an elevation gain/loss of 6,400 feet among others in the area. The Pacific Crest Trail passes through the northern end of the valley so depending on the time of year you go there you may meet a few through-hikers on their way to Canada. In summary, Stehekin Valley Ranch was a 5-star experience for us. Expect a ranch an you won't be disappointed. Lots of fun.

Room Tip: Tent cabins are bare bones canvas over wood frame. They are noisy in the wind and rain. You'll...

We stayed for two nights at the end of the season in late September. After arriving on the Lady of the Lake II we caught the Stehekin Shuttle Bus, passage on which is included in your room rate. While at the ranch you have full use of the shuttle so we rode the bus to High Bridge for our day of hiking. Our cabin was very comfortable and the queen-sized bed was just the perfect hardness (or softness) for a great night’s sleep. There were twin beds in the loft. A stall shower worked very well and provided lots of hot water.

In front of the cabin is a deck with comfortable wooden chair that are great for relaxing and reading, while having a beer. There was satellite based Internet Service, which while not fast, worked quite well. There is no phone service.

Meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) were included in our room rate, which made this place quite a bargain. The owners are great hosts and can provide lots of history of this spectacular valley.

We traveled with and stayed in the cabin next to the Brownings (who wrote the prior review with lots of great detail so I won’t repeat all of that again) But let it be said Melanie and I loved this place, and plan to return again.

Great two night stay at the Stehekin Valley Ranch. The ranch is located approximately 8 miles from Stehekin, the last few miles over a gravel road. Stehekin is a remote community located at the end of Lake Chelan, a 55 mile long lake. Transportation to Stehekin is by the Lady of the Lake ferry boat, float plane or hiking in. There are no roads to Stehekin. Guests of the ranch ride the Stehekin Shuttle from the landing to the ranch. The price is included in your room rate.

We enjoyed a cabin which had a queen bed down and twin beds in the loft, and bathroom with a shower. There is a table and chairs and a futon. There is no heater in the cabin, but we found it comfortable. Extra blankets are available for chilly nights. The ranch is not open during winter months. The cabins are a lovely knotty pine with a deck out front looking toward a field. There is electricity from the ranch's own generator. Electricity to lights is available all the time. The electric plug in the bath notes that electricity to the plug is for two hours in the early morning and two hours in the evening when the generator is running. No cell phone service, no T.V.,very limited computer. Keep in mind this is a remote area.

Included in your room price are 3 delicious meals served cafeteria style in the cook shack. The cook shack is a large knotty pine room with large fire place at one end, and deck out front for outdoor seating in the warm weather. Very large trestle tables run the length of the room with a few 2-person tables around the outer walls. Large windows look out on the mountain views. The meals are plentiful and delicious. For those planning on hiking or being gone during lunch, sandwich fixings are set out after breakfast and you can make your lunch to go. Dinner has a nightly special, plus many options such as salmon and steak and many more. There are numerous salad choices and side dishes. Dessert are your choice of delicious pies from the Stehekin Pastry Company, delivered fresh daily by the shuttle.

The shuttle, which makes 4 round trips up and down the valley, stops at the ranch on each trip. Bikes are available to rent, or schedule horseback rides, kayaking or hiking. Many hikers stop at the ranch and it is a great opportunity to visit and hear the stories of their adventures in the back country. The area abounds with opportunities to hike.

The owners and staff are friendly, gracious and generously answer visitor's questions. Traveling to the ranch we saw quite a few deer and a few elk. Across the road from the ranch is the Stehekin river which can be heard from your cabin.

This was a wonderful, quiet and peaceful experience. Almost like camping, but with comfort. We look forward to future stays at the ranch.

My wife and i stayed 4 nights here and enjoyed it a lot. We are hikers and the hiking is somewhat limited because of Congress's refusal to repair the road into North Cascades NP. But the ranch is beautifully set. The food is good and plentiful. The fruit pies to die for. My only criticism is the low quality of the bathroom fixtures in the cabins.

We were recommended Stehekin Lodge from a neighbor. I looked on the web to see what else was available and more secluded. My hubby and I ended up staying for 3 nights in a tent cabin. The whole trip added up to about $1,000, but that included our stay, boat, horseback riding, transportation at Stehekin, kayaking, and food. We really had the best time. It was our 20 year anniversary trip for my husband and I. We really want to go back again and do the river rafting. If you like the outdoors, don't care to go to the beach, we both recomment Stehekin Valley Ranch! The host Cliff is great. All the staff is awesome!!

Room Tip: If you like to really hear the outdoors and don't mind walking 40 feet to the bath, stay in a te...

Our family from Michigan, Minnesota, and California spent a week hiking, riding horses, kayaking, putting a 1000 piece puzzle together along with other visitors, 4 days we hiked 5 miles after packing our own lunches, ate good home cooked meals twice/three times per day, learned to know and love the relaxed and friendly owners and ranch hands! Loved the old fashioned aprons everyone wore during meal prep, and of course we got to know the great kitchen staff the best. Loved the huge old coffee pot on the steel grill at the massive fireplace! The wild life and hiking trails were just great! Pie every night was the best, as were our Sierra Club leaders!

Room Tip: we all slept in the tent cabins, which meant a tiny walk to the bathroom at night, with a flash ligh...
