“Nice surrounding in the middle of park”
Reviewed 20 June 2014

We stayed in Wuksachi Lodge at the end of April when we visited Sequoia National Park. The lodge is in the middle of the park. We came in from the south-west entrance and it took us a long time to reach the hotel due to the winding mountain road. The room was Ok, however the cleaning crew seemed not doing a thorough job in cleaning the room. The coffee pot with last guest's leftover coffee was not cleaned. A used hand towel was still hanging on the shower curtain rod. . All the front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant in the lodge was excellent in comparing to most other in-park restaurants.

The lodge is located in the middle of woods. The surrounding looks beautiful. It takes about 10 minutes to the Giant Sherman tree.

On the day of our visit, there was a dramatic weather change. More than 15 inches' snow fall was accumulated overnight. Our car was totally buried in the snow. The crew from the hotel was very helpful in clearing the snow and helped us moved our car. They also helped other guests in installing the snow chain etc.

From Wuksachi Lodge to Kings Canyon is not that far if highway 180 is opened. However, due to the overnight snow, the general highway from Sequoia National Park to Kings Canyon National Park was closed. We had to turn back from where we came in (highway 198) the day before and took the route from outside the park (route 63) to get to the John Muir Lodge in the King’s canyon National Park.. It took us about 3 - 4 hours to get to the other side of the mountain.

Thank you for posting your review of Wuksachi Lodge from your visit in April. I am pleased to read that you enjoyed the staff, the restaurant and the location. However, we apologize that that the housekeeping department had some gaps in service, as that is not typical of our operation and certainly will monitor as we move forward. Glad to see the team stepped in and assisted with snow removal! Thank you for sharing your comments. All the best, Brandy Frederich, Assistant General Manager, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

The lodge is set in the most beautiful surroundings. It really is phenomenal. Having read some of the criticism of the place, I wondered at first where people were coming from. However, after a few days, I began to understand. The room was perfect for our family of five. It was spacious, clean and well appointed. The distance from the car park to the accommodation was nothing really, particularly as luggage trolleys were available. Check in with Steven was excellent. He was courteous, helpful and friendly. Meal times were rather clumsy though. The food was pretty good, breakfast in particular was very good value. However, the service was patchy at best. Strange because staff were friendly and worked hard but seemed to be working without direction at times. At breakfast, everything ran out: bread, coffee, bacon, fruit etc. Normally hotels are constantly checking these but it was only because guests alerted staff that these foods were replaced. As stated, staff were hardworking and friendly but seemed to spend more time clearing tables than replenishing food. You could sense the stress that staff were under.
All in all, a wonderful place but with a little attention to service standards, it could be world class.

Thank you for your well structured review. I am pleased to read that you felt the place was spacious, clean and well appointed. Regarding your comments with F&B we agree that there is some opportunity for improvement as the staff is still a little green. We will work on improving those gaps, but was pleased to read that felt the staff was hardworking and friendly. We hope to see you again in the near future!

Saw a mouse run across the floor at 3:15 am after hearing noises. Later we found mouse poop in the bathroom and Ralph even managed to scale a table and paper grocery bag to nibble through ziplocks and eat some almonds. No hole in the grocery bag so he climbed in and out. A maintenance man admitted that they've had problems with mice, squirrels and chipmunks, and the front desk added rats to the list. You'd think for $240/night they'd have better pest control.

Thank you for your feedback. We take rodent reports very seriously and are sorry that your stay at Wuksachi included a mouse sighting. All such reports lead to “exclusion” work to remove any animals or signs of animals in areas our guests or employees may have contact. In warmer months, there is a rodent population increase in the parks. Although we are unable to use poison and bait stations due to national park regulations, we maintain ongoing vigilance to ensure pests are controlled effectively to safeguard our guests.

We would like to discuss this incident further. Please call our Assistant Manager, Brandy Frederich, at 559-565-4070.

We got a reservation last minute as we were not happy at our out of the park motel at Yosemite and were very pleased. The views are beautiful, the sequoias are amazing. I loved the park and the easy hiking trails after hiking in Yosemite. We stuffed all 5 of us into 1 room (2 beds and a cot). It was tight but cheaper than 2 rooms. The staff were all very friendly. Our extra towels and cot were delivered no problem. The check out clerk even credited my account at check out for my AAA discount even though I was told we weren't eligible when we booked the room the night before. Breakfast was phenomenal!! Dinner was good/ok, not really stuff on the menu that my family liked. The only unusual thing is the long walk or really hike up to your room with your suitcases and no elevators. But it was absolutely worth it. We loved the park--saw bears multiple times. Did I mention Breakfast buffet was phenomenal!!

Room Tip: It was a hike from the parking lot and up the stairs to our 3rd floor room, but we were there to hik...

Thank you for choosing Wuksachi Lodge and sharing your kind review. We are pleased to see that you enjoyed the park as much as we do. I hope you were able to catch a glimpse of one of the mothers and cubs that are stirring in the meadows. Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance at the Front Desk as the Lodge offers luggage assistance. Another dining option that the lodge offers during the summer is the Wolverton BBQ with a living history program by a naturalist. We hope that you will visit with us again!

We stayed here with a tour on June 4. The trip to get here is a big treat - roads are climbing the sides of mountains to get to the great Sequoias.
The lodge consists of 3 buildings of motel type rooms and the comfortable lodge housing the gift shop, lounge area, small bar and a large restaurant.

The rooms were comfortable and clean. There was a fridge in the room. To get from the rooms to the lodge for meals was a bit of a walk between the buildings, through 2 parking lots, and a small pathway to the lodge driveway. Handicap parking is available, but it still seemed it might be a bit difficult. You could check with the lodge to see if they could provide a cart to get back and forth. Bags were delivered quickly for us, but some of those on the tour got the wrong ones or had to wait quite awhile to get theirs. Some confusion is not uncommon for a tour.

The restaurant is in the lodge and note that this is the only place to eat probably within at least an hour's drive. The food was mostly good although the wait staff needs a bit of training. Either orders were written incorrectly or the kitchen staff didn't prepare some items according to the order. At our table for 4, one salad was missed and then once brought, the main course followed almost immediately. A dessert menu was requested and forgotten until we asked 3 wait staff for it. I had lamb shank which was tasty but very salty. The other items were very good. The buffet breakfast was very good. Hot and cold choices including eggs, waffles, sausage, pastries.

The area around the "village" is well treed and wild. We were warned to always be aware of our surroundings in case of bears. While we didn't see any on the premises, I am sure the warning was well informed. There was a star gazing walk in the evening. If you want to do this, have a jacket and slacks as the air high in the mountains is cool at night. The lodge is at a high elevation so take your time walking around.

All in all, a lovely place to stay in a National Park. Isolated. Wild. Smell the pines.

Room Tip: There were 3 floors of rooms in our building (Stewart) and assume so in the other 2 buildings. Ther...

Thank you for staying with us and providing a detailed picture of the property and your experience. We are pleased that you enjoyed the majority of your stay, but apologize there were some service gaps in the dining room while we were training in some of our new staff. We appreciate your feedback and hope that you will visit us again in the near future!

We are not a camping family, but we love the great outdoors. We love to stay here because we play outside all day and come back to a cozy room and a very comfortable bed. Nothing better than ending a full day of hiking with a hot shower with pine scented soap. The whole family enjoyed their stay.

If your idea of getting away is traveling to a place different from home and a place that reinvigorates, then you need not look any further. The Sequoias are what you need to make you feel the awe of wonderment and renews your spirit of exploration. I love visiting every year, and every year I find something new to love about Wuksachi Lodge and its surroundings!
