Spent 2 days at the resort and had a great time. The ONLY reason I'm not giving a full 5 stars is the lodge. The dining hall seating is old and very uncomfortable, noisy, and not private at all and the wait staff is extremely slow and unresponsive. The food was 'ok'.

Within a 2-3 hour drive from the Baltimore, Washington area, Shenandoah National Park is a different and relaxing experience. Skyland Resort has numerous cabins and rooms, but we like to request a room with a balcony view looking down into the Shenandoah Valley. The rooms are rather plain but adequate. It is a perfect place to read, relax, and watch a beautiful sunset. The restaurant has good food at very reasonable prices! And for those who like to walk, there are hiking trails (including the Appalachian trail), horseback riding, and ranger led educational walks. It's the perfect opposite to a beach trip. A favorite activity is just taking a drive on the skyline drive soaking up all that scenery!

The stay at Skyland was wonderful! The time of year was also great as there are so many wildflowers and flowering trees/shrubs. The accommodations were fine and the food was excellent. Breakfast was exceptional with the best oatmeal I've had in years!

My experience was excellent, but I also had a newly renovated room. I might have had a different opinion if I had been given an older room. The new rooms feel fresh, clean, with hardwood floors and tiled bathrooms. We had a wonderful view off our deck. I definitely plan to go back.

You don't go to Skyland because you're looking for a "resort" experience. You go because you love to hike, to see wildlife, to spend time outside, but you'd rather stay in a basic hotel than camp. Sure, the decor is dated, the bathroom is basic, and if you're "lucky" enough to get a room with a tv, there are only a handful of channels. But the views are spectacular, the location can't be beat for hiking, and after an 8 mile hike through multiple waterfalls, the beds are comfortable (enough) and you don't really care that the hot shower doesn't also have a soaker tub. I only wish there were more common areas - some open seating, a pool, or a big grilling area would be nice. The restaurants are decent but nothing to write home about, but considering that you're 20 miles from the nearest Skyline Drive exit, the prices aren't awful and if you've been hiking all day, any hot meal is a good one.

Room Tip: Appledore has a stunning view and is away from the traffic of the restaurants and office.
