Owner description: One half of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, separated from the rest of the park by almost 50 miles.

We briefly stopped at the visitor center then drove the park road (28 miles round trip) to the trailhead for the Sperait Point Trail at the Oxbow Overlook . The Sperait Point Trail is actually a short part of the much longer Achenbach Hills Trail. This is a 2.4 mile roundtrip hike across grasslands to the Little Missouri River overlook. The trail takes you through rolling prairie and is rated easy to moderate. The grasslands were in magnificent bloom. It seemed like every few feet there was a flower demanding to have its picture taken. Coming from the desert southwest, one of the big surprises was finding cactus. I guess that must tell you that you will get much the same view of the river and the valley that you get from the Oxbow Overlook; however, you will have missed all the subtle beauty that is the prairie grasslands. The North Unit of the park gets fewer visitors than the South Unit and we can testify to that fact. We were very much alone on this very nice trail.

I expected to see some hills and perhaps one bison. Wrong. We saw spectacular views of the Badlands, the Little Missouri River, and many, many bison. A hidden gem located next to the western North Dakota oil fields.

The north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park is a hidden gem. We traveled up from the South Unit in Medora, a little over an hour trek, and it was well worth it. There were surprisingly few visitors, and the views were amazing. Buffalo roamed close to the road, and one even licked our van much to the kids delight. The few short hikes we did were very fun and educational and were easy to do on well maintained trails. The highlight of my trip though was a stop at the River Bend Overlook for lunch. Easily in my top 10 lunch spots and I'm 42 years old! it was awesome! I highly recommend a slow drive through the park to take it all in.

We rode motorcycles coming west on RT 200 from Devils Lake. It was an spectacular day that was only made better when we got to the badlands. The views look like the moon must look in many places and it was an unexpected surprise. We camped at Juniper and the park service was friendly. The camping site was $12 plus the entrance fee, but everything is cheaper if you have a Federal park Sr. Citizens pass. Campsite didn't have showers, but had everything else you'd expect. The little Missouri River is next to the campsite. We were thinking about fishing, but it was really muddy and apparently was geared towards catfish. The ride to the end of the trail is scenic and worth doing.

The scenic drive and view points along the road at the north unit are lovely, so take it slow and enjoy. Lots of walks, short and long so make sure you pick up the park map. We saw loads of buffalo roaming in the meadows and also right by the road. If your into birds lots to see and hear to. Its worth bringing a picnic to stop off and enjoy the park.
