“Excellent lodge in a superb location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2014

When visiting the parks of the US we tend to stay in National Park lodges in preference to accommodation outside each park. Zion was the fourth stop on a 3 week tour of southwestern US national parks, and I'm writing about it first because it feels as if our holiday has finally taken flight after some disappointing times elsewhere.
We stumped up for a lodge suite so we have spacious accommodation but what has surprised and impressed us is the quality of the room, particularly the furnishings and the general state of the decor. Solid wooden furniture of a type we'd be happy to have at home, a modern coffee maker that also makes tea (we're English, after all), a safe that accommodates a laptop, iPad, phones, SLR camera and spare lenses with ease (at Yosemite our safe barely had enough room for a wallet and two phones). Heavens above, there are also glasses to drink from rather than plastic cups; am I the only one that abhors drinking from plastic containers?
If you're on a long trip spend the extra 50 bucks and get a luxury room to relax in; this place is an order of magnitude better than our previous park lodges this trip.
We ate both nights in the Red Rock restaurant; good quality fare served with a smile. Park lodge food can tend towards being canteen fare that arrives with a speed that shouts 'microwave' and a taste that says prepackaged. This tasted like someone was caringly preparing food on site and the servers gave the impression that they were happy with the quality of the food they were offering. And a small anecdote about the servers. Our server slipped and dropped a collection of empty plates with a clatter the like of which I have never heard before. His colleagues appeared from all directions in a moment and just got on with the job of clearing up, which with so many hands was done in a moment. Someone gave the unfortunate plate-hurler a friendly pat on the back, then everyone went back about their business. It all gave the impression of a happy crew working together to make sure our vacation was the best it could be. We like that.

Room Tip: Suites worth the extra cost

Green Features: Generally excellent; recycling, environmentally sensitive lighting, shuttle buses replace car use; but why on earth have patio heaters? Sit inside if it's cold; heating the entire atmosphere is a job for climate change deniers.

The Zion Lodge is THE place to stay while visiting Zion National Park. It is the only accomodations inside the park and is fantastic for hikers as you are only minutes away from the 5 star hikes. The rooms are of standard size, but clean. The grounds are quite inviting, especailly the large front area under the cottonwood tree. The lobby has comfortable chairs and chess games - so if the room gets too small, there is plenty of space outside. We especially enjoyed the beer garden to cool off after a hike.

We had a luxurious "Lodge Suite" (sitting room and bedroom) which was quite spacious and well appointed. A/C is necessary here in July, and there was a quiet but effective unit in each room. But the best part was being in the midst of the canyon, watching the moon rise from a balcony off our room and viewing the low sun at dawn and dusk on the cliffs. We have stayed at the Cliff Rose in Springfield (also a good place), but being in the heart of things day and night is a dramatic experience. The buildings are fairly modern and efficient. We could have wished for an elevator as we carried our luggage upstairs, but porters are available if you need one.

Room Tip: Lower priced units will be smaller and offer fewer amenities, but the canyon location is unbeatable...

Green Features: Xanterra properties in general appear to be environmentally conscious (without obvious inconvenience to guests), and the Zion Lodge's in particular. Its isolated location may make that necessary.

Nice cabins. No TVs. Top notch scenery surrounds you. Best location. Walk across the street to see Emerald Pools (.6 mile pretty easy hike). Gorgeous waterfall. You can hike further to the next set but it gets more difficult. #1 thing-take the free shuttle to see the Narrows canyon-easy, unique, and gorgeous. You must go far enough to walk through the river at least for a short ways to get the best experience. Great lodge.

My family and I have been coming to Zion Park and their lodges since 2001. Having stayed in the western cabins almost every time, and I can say we've never been disappointed. They are clean, simply appointed and in a great setting. They are at the center of some of the greatest hikes and unparalleled beauty.

Room Tip: You'll need to book a western cabin at leaf 10 months in advance.

Green Features: You'll have to buy resizable water bottles to take water on a hike as they no longer sell bottled water.

As the only lodge in the Zion park, there is no better location. Zion lodge was rebuilt with classic park architecture after a fire in 1966. Located at the base of the canyon, accommodations are spread out from the lobby and restaurant which keeps noise to a minimum. Room are spacious with adequate bathroom facilities. Wifi is a maybe in the room (we were able to download email but using the internet from the room was "iffy." There is one free computer in the hotel lobby with a printer, although the computer appeared to be on the "older side" using an outdated operating system so some functionality will not be available. We did have a flat screen television with good reception which was surprising given the remote location. Shuttle service along the road to access trails is free and runs all day. Unless you visit in winter, you cannot access the hiking trails by car. You have to get to a point where you can connect to the park shuttle. You have two choices for meals, a restaurant and an outdoor cafe. We used both and each was nice. If you want to swim, there is no pool - but get to the Virgin river and find a nice area to get real wet! Highly recommend this lodge!

Green Features: This is a Xanterra Parks and Resorts facility and everything runs on an eco-friendly basis.

We stayed in the Zion lodge for two nights. For the trip we stayed at other park lodges and this was by far the best. Newer, cleaner, tasteful, not intrusive to the natural beauty of the park. Location cannot be beat. You leave your car in the park vs. taking the shuttle in and out of the park for each visit.
Its like Zion VIP, at a great spot, in a good hotel. We actually splurged for the suite. It was only about 50 or so bucks more than the normal hotel room and it was worth every cent. For a family it was ideal. 2 rooms. Kids slept on the pull out couch, which was plenty big. Parents had basically own master bedroom with king bed. 2 vanities on each side of bathroom. balcony facing the slopes was very cool in the am and at night. The Zion lodge was the best one we stayed in vs. GC, Mesa Verde, Bryce...
If you are staying in Zion to see the park for a few days and can afford to stay at the Lodge, do it. its worth it. easily.

Room Tip: If you got the coin, stay in a suite. not that much more but you get a great room
