Its quite impressive that this tunnel was built 80 years ago or more. There is a great hiking trail that starts near the tunnel and it gives great vistas of the canyon and some of the mountains

We took this out of the canyon two years ago after a couple of days in the campground there. It requires some experience if you are driving a large motor-home and pulling a car. When you get to the tunnel you wait until there are a number of RV's lined up, then a ranger co-coordinating with the other end which stops all traffic leads you through the tunnel driving in the center of the road to allow for the sloping sides of the tunnel which could scrape your RV's upper corners. It really isn't difficult and certainly worth the experience, some of the most beautiful scenery you will see anywhere in North America.

Zion itself if simply breath-taking but doing this drive takes it a notch higher. The first time I went to Zion, I missed doing this drive but when I recently re-visited, I did this by car and it was like a ride on a rollercoaster not knowing that you will see and feel next. The tunnel was a thrill and getting to the other side was a different experience since the rock formations and terrain were different. Absolutely a scenic drive on a different elevation and angle. I was there in the Fall so colors were vibrant! Definitely worth the extra 30-45 mins on Zion. You can go down for an extra hike right after the tunnel.

This route is a well worthwhile scenic diversion. I did it twice in one day and look forward to doing it again.

We drove from the lodge out the East side of the park and the drive and tunnel were a blast. Coming from the lodge, just to get to the tunnel is a harrowing drive along a steep switchback road with views from every side with lots of turnoffs for photos. The tunnel itself is about a mile long, very dark but with amazing windows built into the side for great views. After the tunnel the rest of the drive to exit the park is also becuatiful with all kinds of rock formations including Checkerboard Mesa.
