“Must be done at Zions”

After a long afternoon of hiking, I took my family up to drive through the tunnel. The drive up to the tunnel is worth it all on it's own. Beautiful rock cliff canyon and great views. The tunnel itself is really neat. It goes on and on. There are a few windows where the side of the tunnel opens up and you can see out over the valley. There is two way traffic unless a tour bus goes through, then they shut down traffic and make it a 1 way tunnel till the tour bus has passed. The tour bus has to drive down the center of the tunnel for clearance. On the way back we had to wait the full amount of time for the bus coming from the opposite direction. It only took about 6 minutes in the line before they opened the traffic up to bidirectional traffic again. We were lucky to be able to find a parking spot at the bathrooms just across from the guard station at the top of the tunnel.

“Take this drive!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2014

So interesting to go through this looooong tunnel. If you are at all claustrophobic I wouldn't recommend it though. There are times when it feels like the tunnel will never end and you will never get out. However, for me this was exciting :)

Very cool to look out of the peep holes along the drive to make sure there is still a world out there.

“A top drive !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2014

This is both an exciting and rewarding drive with great views along the way and is a popular route to link Zion and Bryce canyon, both are incredibly beautiful National parks. On the east side of the tunnel there is a Trailhead called the Canyon overlook Trail that you might want to check out, but it is uneven in places and has long drop offs, although mostly fenced it is not for everyone. Just after this [heading east] you will come to a parking area for Checkaboard Mesa which is quite pleasant. If you are driving a large vehicle, such as an RV, you will have to wait a short while and pay a fee for a tunnel escort. This is just a case of them stopping on-coming trafic from entering the other end of the tunnel to allow you to drive down the centre, as the edges of the tunnel are lower near the side walls creating an arch.

“an excellent drive in an excellent place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 February 2014

we (my girlfriend and i , from the uk), have so far taken two r.v. trips in the grand circle, and have taken this drive twice, the first time heading clockwise around the circle and the second time anti clockwise, so we have taken the drive both ways.
with a fairly large r.v you are required to stop at the entrance of the mile or so long tunnel, and wait until a park ranger gives you the go ahead.
the tunnel is unlit inside with a few windows cut into the cliff face being the only light available.
emerging from either end of the tunnel you are greeted with the most marvellous scenery, drawing gasps and whoops from both of us.
coming down the mountain is a spectacular drive with almost hairpin bends overlooking hundreds of feet down from the road.
there are plenty of pull ins for photo opportunities, which we took many.
reccomended to anyone

“Pretty cool tunnel to drive through”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 January 2014

Its quite impressive that this tunnel was built 80 years ago or more. There is a great hiking trail that starts near the tunnel and it gives great vistas of the canyon and some of the mountains
