We were there on a Saturday and it was more crowded. However, we feel that the street has its special features. There are many local shops and if you make it to the end there are some tea shops that offer great view.

We went by public transport and its really convenient for us to take the bus from Jiufen directly to Taipei.

Worst Half Day Excursion of My Life. Don't believe the photos unless u r going to stay overnight in the village away from the Old Street. The Old Street which is where you are taken as a tourist was horrible. Overcrowded with crappy shops either side. A few really nice tea houses as the end of the street overlooking the water. The rest is rubbish.

TMS -> Ruifang
Ruifang take bus 1062 to Jiufen, 15 twd, around 20 min trip.
If is rainng, kinda hard to walk to their street, need to be careful.
Many things to shop and buy there like their home made food.
Can try a few, like the ice cream with peanut inside popiah skin, 40 twd each ...
Things there are affordable but many people on weekends, so try come early and avoid weekends.

We went there on Monday late afternoon so that it was less crowded. It was a nice experience to walk along the old street. But, most of the shops were selling the same local food products and souvenirs. Up to the top, we enjoyed cold chilling drinks in one of the coffee shop. The hill-side view from the coffee shop was breathtaking. Basically, I would recommend this place for first-timer. However, I would not go there again as it was quite crowded and also a long journey from Taipei city.

Board public bus 788 from opposite Ruifang train station to reach Jiufen, the journey will take about half an hour. The walkway is quite narrow and goes mostly downhill; the tiles on the floor will get slippery when it drizzles, so make sure your children do not run around. The food and souvenirs are generally the same price as other night markets, but there are certain speciality shops that sell stuff you don't see elsewhere. The best time to go is before lunch or late afternoon.
