This an easy hike most of the way, with only 1 part requiring climbing up a long flight of stone steps (somewhere in the middle of the hike) and another part requiring a long descend down stone steps approaching Dali. The latter bit can be avoided if you just follow the longer trail over a series of switchbacks. The recommended time is 3 - 4 hrs to complete the hike. Well maintained and clean toilets are available along the trail. Food is not available for sale, but there are vending machines.
Check with the staff at the Visitor Centre or the train station at Fulong on the time schedule of the trains in Dali if you want to return to Fulong. We started on the hike from Fulong at 7.40 am and got to Dali in time to catch the 11.30 am local train back to Fulong ($15, about 15 mins).
On the whole, it was a pleasant hike, with nice views of the rural countryside, the ocean, the saddle where the trail meets the Taoyuan Valley trail and a high lookout view of Dali as you approach the town. Yuanwangkeng Riverside Park near the initial third of the trail is a nice place to rest and have a picnic. Wear shoes with good grip as the stone steps become slippery after rain.
