“Super experience for city kids”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2013

A definite experience for your city kids! Just 10 minutes off the freeway, strawberry fields in the neighborhood, absolutely convenient even for a Hong Kong family like us. Rooms are huge and clean, kids enjoy pillow frights upon the loft without giving parents too many troubles. Farm animals walk around as you are one of them. Giant turkey welcomes you before you step out the car, of course the two lovely sheepdog collie as well. Donkey waiting at your door, peacock shows her dress in the middle of the yard. First time to discovered chickens all live and lay eggs on trees, however it doesn't help to avoid their eggs to serve on our plates.
The couple Mr & Ms Fann (owners) are someone you won't forget, very nice and helpful. Ms Fan prepares different kinds of local breakfast and take care our inquiries. Mr Fann not only a professor in philosophy but also in whiskey as well! He gave us a lesson about whiskey on the 1st night together with another very nice family Lo whom also the guest next room, Mr Fann shared some of his collections of whiskey and we also finished two bottles of Red Wine that night.
Thank you Mr & Ms Fann! What a Chinese New Year holiday at your farm, specially your treat for 2nd day dinner of year of the snake!

We stayed here one night. It's a very charming place especially if you like exotic birds and a natural setting. The hosts are very welcoming. I suggest reviewing your western and eastern philosophy before arrival. Professor Fann (Professor of Philosophy) likes to converse on the subject.

Also, bring your earplugs. The birds, especially the roosters are ever present all night long. Most farms have one rooster to keep the hens happy. This one has at least six and, if you know roosters, they like to compete.

Our family visited their wonderful farm house in Xinzhu. It's a highlight of our entire trip to Taiwan. The room was clean and cozy. Their breakfast was freshly baked cake and fruit from their trees around the house. Our children were thrilled by the animals roaming in the garden: peacock, turkey, chicken, dogs, cats and even a pony.

Talking to Mr.Fan and his wife was a thrill, accompanied by fireplace and nice drinks in the living room. We miss this family already. Highly recommend anyone who would like to truely experience Taiwan to stay here. Both adults and children will have fond memories of this place and especially the couple...

I wish i can give Prof Fann and Mrs Fann 100 stars for their B&B. I am travelling with my in-laws and my 5-yr old boy, and we booked the 2 rooms. As described by others, its an outstanding and pardise B&B. Rooms are clean and spacious with both aircon and heating system. Thus, there is no worry of too cold or too warm weather to stay in this B&B.

The free range animals (horse, peacocks, turkeys, ducks, chickens, parrots and etc) is a mini-farm and the hundreds of trees is a mini botanic garden. The only regret is we only stayed 2 nights in this B&B and is definitely not enough for us. My 5-yr old boy keeps wanting to go back "home" as he wants to enjoy the room, see and touch the animals.

Mrs Fann is such a caring and detailed host, she will prepare minieral water, umbrella, rain coat for us as it was drizzling on the 2 days we are at Hshinchu. She even wakes up at 5am+ to prepare the super delicious breakfast (oat porridge, carrot cake, home-made pumpkin muffin, fried and boiled eggs and etc) as we need to leave at 8.30am to catch the train. We will never forget the special coffee she brewed for us.

We will come back son and highly recommend anyone to this B&B.

Stayed at the Thumbs Up by chance during a recent weekend trip. What a great surprise. Kumi and his wife Lily were gracious hosts, breaking out a bottle of Sparkling French wine when they heard it was my wife's birthday. Talking with Kuni is a thrill for anyone interested in Taiwan culture and history in English, and the best part is the 2.5 acre land which is a living zoo, with free roaming animals, Macaws, a friendly horse who will wait outside your room, peacocks, and a great place for kids and adults to spend a few hours exploring the area. We shall return!

Fantastic end to an amazing road trip around Taiwan. Staying at Thumbs Up B&B is not a just about having somewhere to sleep for the night, it is a holiday in itself. Amazing location, amazing hosts, fantastic animals.

Room Tip: Make sure you have the right address in your GPS - or their telephone number. We had neither - but t...

If we could, we would give this marvelous B&B ten stars instead of the five allowed in this review. Kuni and Lily have created a unique and delightful retreat in a peaceful setting about an hour south of Taipei by car. What sets this B&B apart and makes it so unusual and fun is the fact that visitors share the grounds with an assortment of friendly and talkative animals -- peacocks, parrots, guinea fowl, turkeys, ducks, chickens, a horse, and others we have no doubt forgotten to list. The house is a two-minute walk from a clear, sparkling, and gently meandering river, where one can sit peacefully in a small but open enclosure and have tea or snacks. The large garden includes both lily and fish ponds, as well as an enticing adult tree house, and abounds with lush flowering plants and literally hundreds of trees, most of which bear fruit throughout the summer,. Special and delicious home made muffins and local teas and fruits are plentiful for breakfast, as well as omlettes made from newly laid eggs. While there are only two available rooms, each is very large, quiet, clean and inviting -- a real home away from home. The living room area, where meals are served and guests gather, is also the perfect background for displaying the beautiful pottery teapots and cups fashioned by the artist-philosopher host, Kuni. Proprietors, Lily and Kuni, are a friendly, warm and engaging couple, and they are most knowledgeable and helpful about the area and Taiwan in general. Their concern and advice led us to craft villages and local sites we might have otherwise bypassed or missed. We can't rave enough about our visit or recommend the Thumb-Up B&B more highly.

Room Tip: Both rooms are absolutely terrific and equal in size and amenities.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
This secluded retreat with only 2 guest rooms is filled with first class travel amenities and warm personalized hospitality. Perfect choice for a romantic getaway or weekend retreat. It is ranked No.1 among 43 B&B's in Hsinchu County by Tripadvisor and the winner of 2015 "Traveller's Choice Award". The host is the internationally known Wittgenstein and Laozi scholar K. T. Fann. After retiring in 1995 from teaching philosophy in York University in Toronto, he returned to his native village and turned an abandoned 1 hectre ancestral farm into an organic retirement paradise. He designed and built a unique six-sided home flanked by two guest rooms, all with large windows allowing full views of the seasonal changes of the picturesque scenery outside. He planted many century-old trees; more than 100 kinds of fruit trees and flowering plants. He keeps and breeds all kinds of rare parrots and some of them are flying free and will land on guests' shoulders. There are chickens, ducks, geese, fowls, peacocks, rabbits, etc. running free. He also keeps honeybees and collects his own honey and pollen. The property is surrounded on three sides by a river and shaped like a thumb, thus named Thumb-up retreat. On one side there is a glass pagoda and on the other side a scenic washroom with an open view to the river. There is a lily pond and a fish pond on the premise. In addition, there is a treehouse where guests are invited to have special fresh cinnamon leaf tea. Recently, a wood-firing pizza and bread oven and a ceramic kiln were built. He does everything by hand and is completely self-sufficient in food. All in all he has created his own Taoist paradise and lives a life of simplicity in harmony with nature. You are welcomed to come experience it yourself. ... more   less
